M750: What's the point of the little bolt below the oil screen?

Changed my oil today (4 years & 8k miles, ahem...) and as usual put too much in.  I swear it holds 3.2, but probably thinking of the 1098.  Anyway, didn't feel like sticking a tube down the fill hole to draw some out or taking out the drain plug or taking the screen bolt out again.

So I used that little bolt - when I had the screen out, I stuck my finger down the hole.  Just seemed like a hole.  Checked the schematics, just seems like a drain plug of some kind.  It's got a crush washer, and was REALLY on there.  Halfway through taking it off, reconsidered, but did it anyway.  Took a yogurt cup of oil out, started it up, and all seems good.

Any ideas what it's for?

It's external drilling access for the internal oil passage that goes from the oil screen to the pump.  After the factory is done with drilling that passage...it never gets used again (until a crafty guy like yourself comes up w/a use....).

Ah thanks!  I've always wondered.  I don't recommend taking it out - the effort involved was the same as if you're intentionally stripping the heck out of a bolt.  Went back in much easier though.

I know.  I took one out of a motor I'm building.....and had the hole welded shut.

Seems like a lot of effort for a drilling passage - I'd think Ducati would just weld the bolt up too.  On the plus side, at 20k miles, the ol' 750 had less filings on the screen & magnet than the last time I changed it.  Love that motor.  I'm fully expecting the 1098's (14k) magnet & screen to look like a garbage dump.

The 750 motors are underpowered, but bullet-proof.  That's why I'm building the sh*t out of mine...  Or is it b/c I just don't have anything better to do with several thousand $...

If you dont have anything to do I could send you my 800 engine...just use your money if you dont mind. I would like 100 HP if you dont mind.  [thumbsup]

Pre-1098, I'd ofen cosidered Keihlin carbs, high-comp pistons, porting heads, etc.  But I've realized I really like it just the way it is.  I like shifting through the gears (though the amount of times I've tried to shift to 6th, ahem), blasting off the line, the great clutch, etc.  Yes, a few more HP would be nice, I'd love 900 pistons & clys if someone made them, but it's just fine the way it is.  So I keep telling myself  :)

Haha too true.  I've never really like the stock seat, need to do something about the handlebars, lower my Marzochis back down, etc, etc.

And, of course, I still have too much oil in it.  It's at the top mark when off, dangit.  If I don't get it out, it'll end up all over my airbox.  Not the first time  [bang]

Whoa I like that!  I think the 750's or maybe 800's are the only motors that wouldn't blow apart.  On the other hand, there's a dude on the 1098 forum that makes superchargers  ;D  THAT motor would last about 2 secs on NOS.
