When I changed my oil I cleaned the oil screen also. It was pretty clean with the exception of what looked like green or blue, tiny paint chips. Just a few of them. What is this?

Sorry to go OT a bit, but how often should I open up my oil screen? I just changed my oil, and have owned my bike for 3 years. Never looked into that though. Didn't even realize my bike had one until the other day.

I do it every time, it takes 2 minutes.  I think most do it every other change until the bike has a bunch of miles then you will probally never find anything.  It also lets you get a little bit of extra oil out!

No pics, I should have taken some. It wasn't many just a few tiny flecks of greenish blue.

The book says 18K miles.  Most DIYrs clean it every or every other oil change since we don't have to charge ourselves labor.

I picked up a 570 mile '04 this past winter. When I changed the oil (probably the 1st time - it was nasty), there were lots of blue/green flakes on the oil screen.

I clean it every oil change.  It's a good spot to find things that may be starting to self destruct.  Usually just a few little metal shavings or what not.
