Author Topic: least loud aftermarket exhaust.  (Read 2798 times)

After rebuilding my GF's 2000 m900 I had to temporarily put on the stock exhaust while I fixed one of the cored oem cans. I took it for a 2 hour ride the other day and really enjoyed the peace and quiet. I know.......I'm getting old.

I've never ridden a monster with a stock exhaust before as I bought my 2001 with 2k miles on it in which the previous owner had put a hindle slip on system on it. After throwing that bike down the road, I replaced it with an equally loud micron slip-on, but I'm thinking I'd like to go with a more quiet ride without having to go to stock.

any suggestions?

Someone at the local bike night had a 750 with very quiet Arrows.  They were DOT certified so I guess no louder than stock.  They looked like regular Arrows but the outlet was a little smaller.

I bought my 2001 m900 which had the arrow exhaust already installed. Having never heard it with the stock cans, I can attest the arrows are not obnixously loud.

if its an arrow or termi system you can get some db killers for both from probably your local shop or this board most people will give them to you for free.  they will put the slip on to only slightly louder than stock.

a termi system with db killers in drastically reduces the sound, you still get the low note of the termi system but its no longer on the volume 10 that the slip on are at when you put them on.  its more like its a 3 or 4 level with the stock being a comparative 2 level.

i put db killers in my termi and they drasticlaly cut the noise down a lot i drilled a couple more holes in them to get them only slightly louder but they are no where near as loud as without them, they are now louder but not obnoxious anymore.

Agreed. 

Might as well trade the Monster in for a Vespa  Huh?

Seriously though, db killers are the way to go.  I've never heard of a quieter aftermarket exhaust.

I am always so surprised when i hear this - I had such a different personal experience. 

I went from stock to Arrows (no dbs).  In the process I drove around for a week with just an udder.  I found the bike was jsut as loud, and possibly even more noticeable (maybe in a good way) with the Arrows on.  Especially on decel it was just plain evil, and somewhat inappropriate for the town i live in.

I also started to notice tinnitus setting in  Cry which was probably not 100% bike related, but hte Arrow straight pipes weren't helping, even with ear protection.

With the Db killers i am really happy - it is much louder than stock, but more important to me changes the tone to a deeper, rumblier note that screams when run up into high rpms vs. the stock exhaust that i could never really hear over the clutch.

Personally (and that's all) i think the bike should have come from the factory sounding like this, with the option to open it up for those that wnat it on the track or to be a holligan.

wouldnt pass DOT regulations.
the European ones with removable db killers will sometimes have a rivet or one way screw so you cant take them out (wink,wink)
