Soccer has grown continuously in the US the last 10 years. MLS teams have more fans in their stadiums than ever before. It's coming.

I don't know if it's going to eclipse the other 3 any time soon, but it is a force in the American sporting world.

BTW---my house is a soccer house. I played a little club soccer, and my wife played collegiately. She's now hoping to coach high school level.

I'm pretty sure the US won't make it all the way, but I just can't bring myself to cheer for another country. I want my team to win  [cheeky]

So excited for tomorrow! Spain plays!

but for now, the Brazil-N Korea game coming up should be amazing!

The Cup has now officially also filled my house with food. Does anyone want leftover bobotie, dulce de leche Crème Brulée, Nigerian BBQ, pie, Serbian meatballs? And now I'm making a Slovakian twist on the pavlova. Argh!

the "trendy fans" as you put it jud prob just showed up because they get ridiculed most of the time by people who are afraid of soccer.

as for the suckitude of the US team...they do have a tendency to be awful, but this is pretty much the same team that beat spain and gave brazil a run for the first half. (then brazil remembered who they were and summarily spanked the US team) i'm not writing them off unless they lose to algeria.

if you're bitter about destroying your body because of the sport that's on you, not the game and not the other fans. if you actually enjoy the sport take solace in the fact that if there are suddenly a lot of bandwaggoners that means the sport is growing in popularity and you will havmye more access to higher quality games on TV and in local stadiums.

i was really hoping the ivory coast-portugal game would be really exciting...it's sad when germany has the more exciting game.

Nah, I am not bitter at all. I'd love to still be playing to this day. I think once I get my ankle put back together, I'll start playing a little bit again. I miss the game. I was never a fan of watching it. I don't know why, but just never got into it. I always thought it was boring to watch.

Last world cup was like this too. People buy their shirts, watch and then get upset when the USA loses. Put said clothes away for a year or two or whenever there are qualifiers and then of course full time wear during the Cup.

I'd love to see most kids play the sport past the age of 13 when they are "forced" to chose a sport to play in middle school and high school.

I wish more people would stick with the game into their teen years, but the problem is, parents force them in playing at 3 years old and by the time they are 15, they are burned out unless they really really like the game.

I could go on for hours and hours about it

Isn't that how it is with every sport?  I would bet that every player that is in the world cup started playing as soon as they could walk.  Kids that burn out at 15 are probably little pregnant doges wimps and wouldn't be great players anyway.  It has nothing to do with kids getting "burned out".  The problem is that sports start to get competitive around the teen years and if you suck, you don't play, and that is no fun.

What is wrong with people supporting their country during the world cup?  When would be an appropriate time to wear a US soccer jersey?  Should they be soccer dorks and wear their jerseys all the time?  I worked with a guy that rocked soccer jerseys and head bands like 3 days a week.  Yea, we got his point, he liked soccer.   [roll]

BTW: I am also a big fan of soccer, I think its a great sport.  One of the biggest differences between us and the rest of the world is that everywhere else it is a poor man's game.  There are no country club politics, or whose daddy is the coach like there is here.

If soccer were as popular in cities as basketball is, the face of American soccer would change and we would have a more compeditive team.

I'm with you on this one. I am a pretty big fan, but i don't wear gear all the time. I don't talk about it all the time because of the afore mentioned reasons and the fact that until recently i just haven't known many people that were actually interested enough to be able to hold a conversation. I rarely wear my jersey out for a night on the town unless i'm going somewhere i know ppl will recognize it or if there is a game on. i actually bought a "polo" shirt for the philly union so i could wear that to work on gamedays. (it's got a collar so it's legal right? ;D)

A co-worker of mine, his son was on the Ohio ODP Team.

He quit playing the next year.

He got sick of it. Obviously, he didn't suck.

How was the Brazil game? I know the results, but wanted to see if they looked good. Looking forward to watching Spain tomorrow. Argentina handling was excellent. The Germans... what can you say about that game other than wow.
