When it's that close in the WORLD CUP you don't call goals back. Period.

Landon Donovan was very diplomatic in his response when asked why he thought the ref called back the goal.  "Well, it's his first game in a World Cup. Maybe he just got caught up in the moment."

I wouldn't have been that nice...

I think the ref called it without the flag from the linesman. First the ref said it was a foul, then offsides. (according to ESPN)

if the linesman called offsides, the ref could overrule it.

let's hope the refereeing in the england game improves.

the card happy ref in the germany game screwed them up, the lack of calling in the US game played it's part along with the blatant incorrect call.

maybe algeria has a chance today and the US can beat them on weds to advance.  [laugh]

How about those Algerians? Best possible outcome for the US, although another pathetic showing for England.

2nd half of US game this morning was wildly exciting. I listen on the radio (yes, I HATE the vuvuzelas), and the broadcasters were really into it after Donovan's goal. I think I must have woken up a few neighbors with the third goal that wasn't...  [cheeky]

broadcasters are also filtering it out a bit...

Apparently they have redoubled their efforts - "Host Broadcast Services, the company that provides the broadcast feed for the World Cup, said Tuesday it has doubled its audio filters to reduce the constant blaring buzz of vuvuzelas."

And some DIY filtering you can do if your TV has a good eq.

I am all for respecting the traditions of the host country, but every other country in the world seems to think this particular one is bullshit.  There are all kinds of cultural traditions - some are bad, like apartheid or NASCAR.

that's just wrong!

watched the replay. that ref was ATROCIOUS.
he was bad both ways, but i think there were a few calls that were made which stopped the US attack and non calls that would have led to a us goal.

i'm kind of torn on dempsey's early elbow. it was incidental, but it was apparently a hard knock. i don't know that it was card worthy, but it was def a foul that was missed.

From what I understand the handball has to be "intentionally done on a shot on goal" to get a yellow card. Am I wrong on this? There is no way that was intentional, though I understand making the call in the moment. Still, It's a couple days later, and I'm still mad about that game.

An Aussie got carded on the handball in the goal yesterday, though much more deserving  [laugh]
