Fuel warning light - 696
«

I was not able to find anything through search. I took my monster on a road trip last weekend. My fuel light came on a few times indicating that I was going into my reserve fuel. In the manual, it says that means there are 3 litres (0.792516157 US gallons) left in the tank. I also just noticed that the trip fuel counter comes up when the light goes on. The highest I ran my counter to was about 15 miles before fill-up. Roughly how many miles do I have before I'm stranded on the side of the road once the fuel light comes on?

Well...here is a simple way to get an
approximate
idea of range. First, fill up your tank and take note of your mileage. Next, ride the bike till the fuel light comes on and take not of the mileage when you go to fill up. Then, divide the mileage between fillups by the gallons you put back in. This will give you mpg. Then take that number and multiply it by 0.792 and you have an estimate of the remaining mileage when the light comes on.

Don't depend on the fuel warning light, they can break. The trip meter is more reliable.

I've gone 30. I've never run out, so I don't know how far it'll go.

That's a good idea. I think I will try and do that when I get a chance.

I think 30 sounds like a reasonable estimate. I probably shouldn't even go that long, but at least I have an idea of how long I can make it. Living in the city has made me lazy, so I usually don't fill up immediately. It's not like the burbs where there's a gas station on every corner, so it takes a bit more work to get to one.
It's really nice that the trip counter comes up when the light comes on though. That way I know exactly how long I've gone. Fancy modern electronics

I get about 55 MPG on the slab and about 45 MPG out in the hills. So ~ 43/35 respectively on reserve.

And once you do run out, you'll know exactly how long that was after the light came on.

Good point. Luckily that didn't happen on my trip because it would not have been fun walking down the highway in all black full leathers in 90 degree heat to get gas....

the very first month i had my bike it coughed out and the fuel light never even tripped. left me stranded
waiting for a friend with a gas can.
it comes on ever since, but i wont rely on the light at all. trip meter is much better,
ymmv (i may have repalced a blown fuse unknowingly to fix the light, but not that i remember)
