air temp sensor... how do i check if it's dead?

is there an easy way to check with certainty that my air temp sensor is dead?  i hooked up the vdst several days ago and the sensor reading was maxed out (439 degrees iirc).  is there a method where you can check it with a voltmeter?  i don't own one or really know how to operate one though so not to sure i'll be able to do much beyond check the connector for obvious signs of corrosion or cracking etc.  i found a used one on ebay for about $50 so maybe i'll just end up biting the bullet and picking that up.  it's something i want to work properly, as people tell me that it will affect fuel in the bike both at startup and while running.

My Snyder manual has resistance measurements for the air temp sensor:

-20 degC > 27.66 - 30.51 ohm
-10 degC > 15.76 - 17.42
0            > 9.26 - 10.23
+20         > 2.85 - 3.15
+60         > 0.71 - 0.78
+80         > 0.35 - 0.39

Pick up a little digital multimeter - they are cheap (<$30 for a basic one) and come in handy all over the place.

swapped in an air temp sensor from another 05 S4R, and same result... maxed out reading on the VDST.

so, does this mean it's a problem with the cable at this point, or more likely something with the ecu, or vdst software?  except that i hooked the same cable and used the same laptop on a friend's 848 and it was getting a good reading.  so... i'm guessing cable/connector on my bike.

i guess the larger question for me is does this really affect the bike starting *that* much?  additionally, does this sensor contribute more than just fuel at startup?  does it also affect fueling while riding?

Yes, it changes the mixture both at startup and while riding.

The 'maxed-out' reading suggests the wiring is shorted, as higher temps give lower ohm readings according to the numbers I posted out of the LT Snyder manual.

do you think there is any way that it is somehow related to the maxed out value that is showing for the speedo?

i just heard back from bobby at desmoporche, and he informs me that i would really need the 59M VDST for my bike, and not the 5AM one i'm using.  not sure if that's the real cause of the speedo/air temp sensor issue or not though.
