Angler,

Good for you on Gunsite! You'll have a blast and yes they do have a nice facility. I was going to go once when Col. Cooper was still alive but my business schedule messed up the whole deal. I did get to meet him years ago at a SHOT show. It was an honor.

I've had lots of friends over the years take Gunsite classes and loved it. Closest I've gotten to Gunsite since is classes with Clint Smith and Louis Awerbuck, both came from Gunsite. Enjoy the class, bet you learn a lot!

cb,

71/2 or 8 will work just fine on clays. Big difference between trap and skeet. I'm mediocre at both but both are fun. Sporting clays is the biggest hoot and yeah, I'm mediocre at that too! [laugh]

I'm excited.  I'd like to take their pistol course as well, but at $1500 for the class plus 1200 rounds rifle and 100 rounds pistol required, plus plane tickets (plus other gear like mags and pouches), I can only do this every so often.  We haven't formalized plans yet, but all my family is in AZ and I get there a few times a year.  It would be a good excuse to hang with my Prescott peeps and lay a lot of lead down range.  My bro-in-law took a Front Sight week long tactical pistol class last year.  They are in NV and give you a free XD45 with the course.  He wants to try Gunsite this time.  I'd also love to go to Thunder Ranch sometime, but AZ is a cheaper trip.

We are just doing the one where you yell pull and one pigeon goes flying.

I have done the "game" where you have 100 shots at different stations. The rolling pigeons, straight up in the air, etc etc. I think that is called Trap? or is that Sporting Clays?

I think I scored like 56 out of 100

I was pleased with that considering I rarely shoot.

Probably also helped I got to use a friends Semi-Auto Beretta 12gauge. That was a nice firearm.

Yeah, doing those out of state classes can be a money pit. The logistics of getting all your kit, ammo and guns there can be tough/expensive. Luckily I live in TX and it was just a nice hill country drive to Thunder Ranch when it was based out of Mountain Home, TX near Kerrville. I wore that place out... and it wore me out too! [laugh] Never been to it's new home in Oregon. And Awerbuck has a traveling show so I always hit his classes here in town. Tac Pro Shooting Center (Bill Davison) is just west of where I live so I am lucky that I have had many opportunities to take courses so nearby.

Again, enjoy your time at Gunsite!!

I also plan to take a week long tactical carbine course at Gunsite in AZ.  They have a great class and facility.  I think me and my bro-in-law that lives in AZ will sign up for one perhaps this fall.

Right up the road from us!  Do come calling when you're in the neighborhood.

Of course!  Did I forget to mention that I'd invited us to stay at your place and we accepted?  (just kidding!)

I talked to them and they have a course running Feb 22-26.  I've got to be in Phoenix for work the 17 and 18th, so maybe I'll just stick around for some training......I wonder if this counts as "professional development" so I can write it off?  [evil]

You are talking Sporting Clays.

Trap clay pigeons come from a centrally located "house".  There are 5 stations in a semi-circle with handicap positions radiating outward from each station.  5 shots per rotation, 25 shots total per round.

OK, we are doing your second paragraph. I know the rounds are 25 and I have watched people move from one concrete pad to another. And yes, the pigeons come out of one "house" as you called it.

Random question:

I am about to get my CCW (my app is being processed now) and Ohio Law on it is pretty odd. If a store puts up a sign that says no firearms allowed, you can't carry in there.

My question is...........since it is the summer, cars get hot, I won't leave a gun in plainsight, so it would be locked in my glovebox. Also when I go to work, it would be locked in my glovebox as well, so it would be hot in my car.

Is there an issue with heat and the ammunition? Last thing I want is my ammo exploding in my glovebox.

I would imagine there probably is.....?

Here, let me google that for you http://tinyurl.com/35yek8p

Short answer.  No.  I've heard of rounds cooking off in hot barrels, but that is at much higher temps.

I'd be more concerned about secure in car storage. Leaving my guns in the car always concerns me.  They make secure boxes that bolt into consoles or under seats.

You do such good work!   ;D

Id share the same security concerns......especially in Ohio!   [evil]

I believe it is against the law to have a vault in ones vehicle......at least in some states.

I tried to google it, but all the websites at work are blocked that had the potential answer!

Thank you though. I will read those links when I get home.

I don't like the idea of storing the gun in my car either, which is why I probably won't carry to work, but if I have to lock it in my car if I go into the bank........then that is what I have to do.

In MD the firearm has to be in a locked container.  Unloaded.  No loaded magazines or ammo may be in the same box.  It is also against the law to transport a firearm anywhere except to a range, hunting or gunsmith.  Unless you have a CCW which are as scarce as hens teeth. No comment on any of this......

But it is perfectly legal to have a vault in the car, just so long as no ammo is in the vault.

I thought in most states the firearm is required to be in a locked container, or at least outside of reach, unless you have a CCW.  I'm sure I am wrong........

Ah.... Texas. We can have loaded shotguns and rifles in racks hanging in the back window of our trucks! [thumbsup] Except that someone would steal them in about two minutes! [bang] TX allows a place of business to keep ccw out but they have to post a very specific sign plainly visible at the entrance. There are other taboo places too but they recently relaxed some of those restrictions.

I never have had a problem leaving a loaded firearm in a hot car. A small lock box under the seat is a nice idea. It's a compromise but mine is well hidden (no glovebox or console) but it's a little tougher to access in a hurry. Still, a trade off in case the truck gets broken into. Which happened last summer. :P Luckily the alarm scared them off and they left empty handed. A witness to it in the parking lot gave me the whole story. Too bad the security cameras were all pointing elsewhere. Cost me a $275 side window but nothing else.

You guys need to move further south. Open carry is legal here in Bama, unless you are in your car (that's not unusual), and it is only federal/state/municipal buildings you can't carry in.

Walked into Sherriffs office, plunked down $20, walked out with CCW.  [evil]

Ohio is a bit different.

In the trunk of my car I can have all my guns and boxes of ammo.

Illegal transport comes into play if you have any of the guns loaded or a magazine loaded. I could even go as far as to have one big box with everything in it, but the mags have to be empty.

So I guess that is a step process, but not one like you keep the ammo in the "cab" of the vehicle and the guns in the trunk or something of that nature.
