Did we mention save the brass? [laugh]
I plan to list the Federal Gov't. as a dependent on my next 1040 tax filing!

I have flying honey badgers and I'm not afraid to use them!

The fact that flame throwers exist is proof that someone somewhere said "I'd sure like to set those people over there on fire but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

CONFIDENCE: the feeling you have right before you understand the situation.

Pork fan,

Nice pic in your avatar. That's a really cool rifle and story. Never shot one like that. Old guns and bikes kick butt. [thumbsup] Cars and planes too! ;)

It's so much fun to shoot....

The only thing I hit my first time out with her was the big dirt berm behind the target...  [laugh]

45-70 is a hoot to shoot; big bang, lots of smoke, and enough time between shots to savor the experience. My hunting buddy (a flintlock fanatic) has a trapdoor Sharps that we probably shouldn't be shooting, but do, and a modern, break-action 45-70 keeps finding its way into my gun locker as part of the rotating cast of loaners from my father-in-law.

And as for the brass, well, it's not made of solid gold like some here would have you think, but at $20-35 for a reloading kit for 45-70, yes, you should save the brass:

Midway rocks. As does Dillon Precision. My older brother was the re-loader in my family. Sadly he has given it up. Hopefully his boys will pick up the habit. I've got lots of brass they need to re-load. ;) ;D

only if he wants to shoot it.

Actually, most of the gun shops near me carry commercially loaded .45-70 (smokeless powder), and at least one has big bags of .45-70 brass on their reloading rack. With an old rifle like that one, I'd be strongly inclined to handload with lower pressure blackpowder or pyrodex and toward the lighter end of scale; it'll still give a very satisfying boom, and kick all you could want.

It is a bit expensive to buy commercially - I looked and it's $35-ish for a box of 20, so reloading is definitely the way to go. I've probably reloaded (and shot) only 50 rounds or so of .45-70 with a kit like the one I linked to, and they all went bang and hit what I'd pointed at.

So yes, save the brass because it'll save you money, because you can load a cartridge that is way more appropriate (from a safety & aesthetics perspective) for your venerable old gun, and because it's just way more fun to shoot something that you've "built."

Or, because it's made of solid gold and sprinkled with unicorn pee, I'll happily sell you as much .45-70 brass as you want for the low, low price of $10 each. Shipping included.  Wait, for you, $5. ;D

Thanks T-forge...

I remember the gunsmith telling me I needed to shoot lower pressure stuff.  I thought that's what the "Cowboy Loads" were...

I only have the shells that are in the pic I posted, so either way, I'll have to buy ammo so I have brass to reload, right?

This is all still pretty new to me, so I really appreciate all the info everyone has been posting. [beer]
