Looking to purchasing my first firearm.

Now, I've shot a ton, everything from pistols (9mm Beretta sidearm, .357Magnum revolver) to rifles (M14, M16) to shotguns (Mossberg 12Ga, 16Ga), but I've never owned one.

I live in California, which limits me some, however my father lives in AZ. Intra-familiar transfers appear to be fairly easy and are exempted from a lot of the normal CA requirements.

That being said, I'm looking at something in a .40. Cabela's is having a pretty smoking deal ($299) on the S&W SD40. Haven't read any bad reviews.

Recommendations for a .40 at $500 or below?

Home use. Both the wife and I will be spending a good amount of time at the range with it. She has shot before as well, but as with any weapon, you want to be as familiar as possible with it to be proficient.

You might consider something with a bit more weight to tame the recoil for her.

A rail with a light is a good thing for a HD gun.

It feels like it has a decent amount of heft. That being said, I haven't shot it yet.

The M-9 weighs 33+ oz.

The SW is 22.7.

That's a significant difference.

Keep in mind that it doesn't matter what caliber you miss with or how fast you miss.

Another beautiful day at the range.

Woohoohoohoo! Two personal records! For breath holding and number of sharks shot in the face.

~~~SNIP~~~
Keep in mind that it doesn't matter what caliber you miss with or how fast you miss.
Depends on what's downrange.
But that's more in support of your point than not.
