I roll my own.....

45acp and 9mm pretty soon.

I use all used but good quality equipment.  A good single stage press,  scale, die set and powder charger and you're pretty well in business.

Last I checked i was down to between 9-15 cents per round of 45acp.

I bought 1000 pcs of once fired brass and load that with 5 grains of bullseye and hard cast lead RN 200 grain bullets with CCI large pistol primers.

I have not had any problems with finding supplies until recently. 1lb bottles of bullseye have not been available so I had to get a 4lb jug.

ML, is there still a shortage of primers? I never heard there was as big a problem with brass and bullets as there was with primers. That was the word on the street.

Do you run those round nose .45s through an auto or a revolver like a 625 Smith? I assume if it's an auto you aren't having any problems with the lead round nose bullets loading/chambering? I only shoot jacketed rounds, I've heard the lead bullets can foul up a barrel pretty quick and be harder to clean. True... yes/no? Maybe that's the way it used to be. I can only imagine things have improved. [thumbsup]

From what I read hard cast doesn't foul like cowboy lead.

I'm going to start reloading 9mm and .223 at some point. I'll probably use Berry hard cast for the 9 and jacketed varmint type for the rifle.

I buy primers in bricks of 1000. No problems for me yet with large pistol. When I stopped the other day for small pistol primers they only had 400. I think they were just out though.

I shoot a 1911 in .45 acp. Its an argentine sistema made in the early 40s. I ran 500 semi wad cutters through it in hard cast lead. They fed 100% with a high end mag like wilson combat. With the original mag I had some occasional feed issues. .45acp headspaces on the mouth of the case. Never a problem chambering the round so long as it got past the feed ramp.

This time around I loaded hard cast lead round nose in the hopes they feed better. They better, I have 400 ready to go ;)

I also plan to buy some nice mags for it as well. The one I have is a little mangled at the top where the crimp that holds the case is.

Zero issues with lead. Id run a couple hundred rounds through it and the extent of my cleaning would be with a brass brush.

Providing the gun isn't a glock with polygonal rifling the major contributor to leading in the barrel is how hot a load it is.

My range wants 850fps or less. With 5 grains of bullseye I should be around 800 or so. 5.5 grains is about the max. I see no point in loading the maximum.  Not loading the max is easier on the gun. I am just putting holes in paper after all.

Too hot a load will create enough heat/friction/pressure that the od of the bullet liquifies and leaves a little behind. Really, this happens anyway to an extent but its not as bad.

I've always been able to get the bore brand new clean with just a brush. Ill run some solvent through it just because I feel like I should.

At the rate you shoot that rusty .45, they must last forever.     :D

;D

The more I learn about firearms the more I want and the more I want to shoot.

I am planning to spend more time at the range ;)

Funny shit! A kick right in the shorts! [laugh] Ten bonus points for kopf!

ML, did your new cleaning gear you bought handle that surface rust on the 1911? Did you figure out what caused it? Did you ever try the newspaper trick or the 0000 steel wool? I got plenty of practice on my Dad's nasty Win. model 94. [bang] Seeing it beforehand would have made you cry.

It was laying on a mat that trapped moisture

At least I think that was it.

Newspaper helped some but I think it needs the wool which I haven't tried yet.

And while im thinking of it--

-how often do you all go to the range

-average number of rounds fired

-number of guns you take to the range compared to the number you own.

I only have a few so I could shoot them all a lot. You all seem to own 30 plus. How often do they get a workout?

Anyone can answer but kopf must answer ;D

I am at the range almost everyday. I teach for a living.

I own property in east Texas and my brother and I jointly own 365 acres northwest of Dallas near Muenster. My best friend has a ranch in west Texas north of Brownwood that we dove and hog hunt on. I probably shoot more at my buddy's place than I do at mine. I have too much work to do at my place which kills my shooting time there. I certainly help out at my friend's ranch but screw off a majority of the time there with other friends who are shooters. It's always a guy's escape from the house/wife/kids mancation! I don't spend a lot of time at ranges any more. I have portable Arntzen steel targets and steel stands for IPSC cardboard targets that I take with me.

I always drag too much stuff every time I go. I've said it in other posts but I swear I end up shooting the shit out of my .22s more than anything. When I was at my bud's place in October there were zero dove to hunt. I have no idea where they went. So we drank and ate like kings. But there were like 5 hopped up 10/22 Rugers between us all and damn I have no idea how many rounds we shot! We'd have "here, top this shot" sessions that were funny as shit. Lots of laughing our asses off and a damn good time. Some pretty awesome shots were made that we could never duplicate. [laugh] But we acted like we could. ;D

Always work out the 1911s and 9mm Glocks. An AR platform gun or two always goes along and gets used by me and others. Hopefully on a feral hog! The MP5 sometimes goes and any full auto virgins always have to shoot it. [thumbsup] My step son's Ruger model 77 .223 that I gave him last year for Christmas has gotten a lot of break in time this year. Knocked down his first buck with it hunting with his Dad after Thanksgiving! ;D However much we shoot at my place or my friend's it is never enough.

If I could ride a motorcycle and shoot a gun at the same time I would think I'd died and gone to heaven! [laugh]

Hey, it's not like walking and chewing gum at the same time! If I was a better weak hand shooter it could happen. ;D [moto] [thumbsup]
