My father-in-law gets good care through the VA. He had cancer from exposure to Agent Orange, as well as diabetes. He has no complaints.

I seem to recall some nameless individual propose a week long Politics thread for every Ciggie DP enjoys from here on out.......whatever happened to that particularly brilliant idea?
Was it a crack smoking redneck carpenter? ;D

I could use the VA but after the absolute shit that they have put my grandfather through, I would choose the county run general hospital that takes food stamps or crack rocks in trade for exams and will take hookers for most other procedures they do.

I think it all depends on who you see and your attitude in the VA. Take for example my friend Neill who passed away 2 years ago. He was blown up in a helicopter in vietnam, literally blown up. He did 3 tours and had decorations up the ying yang. He lived and walked with the use of canes from 1969 till 2008 because of the VA care for him. He fathered 3 lovely kids and had a great wife. He rode a motorcyle but fell of often. The VA gave him life after his injuries. The shrapnel went up through his feet his legs his pelvis and his spine. There were still bits in him the could not remove due to it would sever his spinal cord. He was in the VA flat on his back for over a year.He received world class care here in Portland Oregon.Maybe he just had a great team he saw I don't know. There is nothing wrong with govt managed healthcare. It is the docs, nurses and staff that make the decisions anyway. I had private ins for 20 years and some companies were nightmares to deal with. My daughter almost died due to some stupid doctor giving her the wrong meds for seeizures. I told them her symptons and he ignored me. I took her back 3 times as she was going into anaflxic shock and the make the beast with two backs stil said "nothing wrong". I took her to the emergency room instead and a great nurse said thats a reaction to meds what is she on ? I told her she made a call, and within a day my daughter was better. It all depends on the doctor. Don't blame everything on the govt, democrat or republican. That is not fair.

i used to pregnant dog about the VA too. still do. and while it has definitely had some major screw ups/ horror stories and bureaucratic nightmares, it was recently pointed out to me that the press never covers all of the good that the agency does.

so, not saying its perfect.....but willing to consider the other side of the coin.

Oh believe me, I understand the concept behind the ratings.  Bad press sells, so that is what the press sells to us.

I just can't get over the fact that so many people were put at risk of being exposed to HIV simple because some of the dental techs did not want to clean the equipment to spec.

Then that would be on the Active Duty personnel working that job, not necessarily the VA.  ;)

i don't think that is/was the consensus. everyone knows the VA has had some spectacular make the beast with two backs ups. few people however, are honest enough/generous enough to allow for all the good the agency does, despite the bureaucracy.
