That is my idea of a kick-ass commuter. It's (relatively) lightweight, can take a beating should be reliable, has enough poke to deal with traffic and the high seating position helps with visibility (yours and the other cars).  A similar prepped 350 or 400 would do as well if you don't spend much time on the freeway.  Throw on some low-profile aluminum panniers (laptop in oneside, shoes in the other) and you are ready to go.  It's priced fairly.

It almost makes me want to move further from office so I have an actual commute. ;)

I work exactly 2 miles from home.  No dice.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

The DR is the Kalashnikov of bikes, put something combustible in the tank and something slimy in the engine and it's good to go!

[cheeky] [laugh]

Just noticed the tank, looks like a plastic over-sized one (maybe safari or acerbis)... interesting [evil]

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

The big 'strom is a solid choice, but it is a bit cumbersome and ponderous in the tight-going if any part of the commute is on city streets.  My Multistrada feels considerably more nimble.  The wee-strom would also be a better option.  I rented one in Alaska and enjoyed it.  I am not sure what the actual weight difference, but it feels significantly lighter than 1000. That Suzuki 650 likes a little bit of revs and can be an entertaining mill.

My commute is 4 miles with an average speed limit of 30 mph and lots of traffic signals.  By the time I gear up, uncover and unlock the bike, open the gate and roll down the drive, I would have already been to work had I taken the cage.  Besides, the only fun to be had in such a short, low speed commute is the kind that gets one in trouble. By trouble I mean the hospital or  [leo].

I've resisted more than one job opportunity that would have added to my commute, but if the perfect situation comes along
I might be shopping for a beater DR. [thumbsup]

And the sugar fountain fairy swore so hard when she came to super-size that stale hope soybean; liiiike a homeless German woman. Who is this super-sizing spirit-crushing femme? And tell her I'll break a tree root up in her shrimp.

Being faster than you thought possible…it feels good. No, screw thatâ€"it feels like shotgunning a gallon of adrenaline and chasing it with an all-night orgy aboard a burning Viking boat.

Pretty much any Jap 250 - 350 DS bike would be perfect for your commute. Great mileage, cheap and easy to fix, and you wont cry your heart out if it gets knocked over. ;)

Not all sizes and colors available, but $394 is a smoking deal for the Arai Corsair V.... http://www.kneedraggers.com/product/?psreferrer=&key=ARAI-CORSAIR-V-HELMET&utm_source=Bronto%2BMail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2012320&segment=badger.

I would call and verify they have it in stock . I have ordered twice from them and both time they cancelled my order after a week . Apparently they ran out of stock .

Oh. My.  That is great.  In that alternate world where I have a multi-bike collextion, I would absolutely have a two-stroke.  I just found out the neighbor across the street has RD 400 Daytona in his shed. That bike must be resurrected...
