Out of curiosity, I'd love to hear more details. Not sure the wife will let me get another bike but who knows.

it is a 1999....I'll pull the exact milage off the bike but I think off the top of my head I am about 57,000ish kilometers....I have the Nonfango hard bags ( all 3) but currently have a Givi knockoff topcase on it due to me having half of a key break off in the lock of the origional topcase...it has the tall windscreen installed on it, but I have the short one stored away...I lost the origional bars that I took off of it in one of my moves after I installed the Pro-Taper bars on it for my own ergonomic preference....I have also installed a cupholder ( laugh all you want, but the coffee at work sucks, so it was used for picking up my morning coffee on my way in and sustained me quite well in that fashion).....the rear mudguard that wraps around the tire is not on the bike as it is broken...screws that hold it in place vibrated out on a long ride back from Charlotte, NC and it broke in that process, I kinda did a quickie temp thing for the remainder of the ride and then took it off when I got home with the intention to see about fixing it.

common issue of the regulator/rectifier harness connector that usually melts was addressed and sectioned out and rewired with fresh heavier wiring from almost front to back...the fuel quick disconnects are in good condition and not leaking at all...I had them replaced with new when I got the bike origionally...had to reseal one of the tanks quick disconnects with new viton orings about 2.5 years ago when I had the tanks off to do that R&R rewiring....bike was origionally gone through by Donnie at Ducpond when I 1st got it and I had him install the MBP collets and gave the bike a thorough going through and gave it a clean bill of health...the battery was replaced about 3 years ago with a good AGM battery as the origionally installed Odyssey battery took a dump when the R&R connector issue was starting to revealed itself....starts up with ease...brakes are good...runs like a top...the known issues that will have to be addressed are that the tires don't have a lot of life left, the belts are due to be changed, and it needs an oil change...also there is a chain roller guide bushing that is worn and gone and I haven't gotten around to ordering one since I wasn't riding it, but the guys on the Cagiva yahoo list have posted a couple of sources for it recently with pt# and have been saying there's been no issue with getting it.

as far as $$$.....well....I haven't marketed it yet...but I am looking at an asking of $2500 OBO to make life easy....it isn't a showbike as the P.O. used to ride it in the sand dunes around Jacksonville and had a few scuffs and scratches and scrapes...but all minor and nothing structural....she's comfy on a long ride and no problem riding it like an ADV bike while standing on pegs.

Another Elefant copy.  At least Morini is down the road from Ducati.. or was..

Not so much.  The Camel was introduced in '81 and I believe the Elefant came out a few years later. The Camel is actually more of a "real dual sport" and was offered in 350cc and 500cc.  The power output of the 501 (mid 40s hp) and weight (sub 350#s) are comparable to, if not slightly better than, an XL650 or a DR650. In general, the Camels competed with the XLs and DRs of the day.

Update: I just did some additional googling and the Elefant came out in 1985, so 4 years after the first Camel.  Here's a pic of an '81 Camel 500:

As you can see it and the later Camels (including the one on ebay) are really more sized and styled like the d-p bikes or even the full off-road 4-stroke enduros of their day.  The first Elefants were more in-line with the early GS models and were the at the leading edge of what started as the Paris-Dakar craze and has now become ADV MANIA.

Ahem

Yes, Morini had a bike called the Camel prior to the existence of the Cagiva Elefant.

HOWEVER, the 1984 Camel looked like this:

... in other words, it looked nothing like the Elefant.

The 1985 Camel looked like this:

However, you seem to have missed the 1984 model Elefant in your googling.. :-)

The Elefant SST 125 was the first Elefant made, and it was introduced in 1983 at the Bologna Moto Show -- Remember that both Ducati and Morini are in Bologna (as well as Malaguti...)

Morini copied the 1984 Elefant for their 1985 Camel design.

To be sure, the 1984 Elefant was a single cylinder, but the copying I was referring to was the "humpback" gas tank and banana seat and extended forks.  This was a radical departure from the "scrambler" style of the 1985 Camel (and other scramblers) and was pioneered by Cagiva with the Elefant -- and then was copied by everyone!

A list of enduros by Cagiva:
http://www.125stradali.com/category/125-enduro/cagiva-125-enduro/

Note the 1983 Aletta Rossa as well -- with humpback tank and banana seat.

No offense, but I think you're reaching ducatiz. What you call the "humpback tank" and "banana seat" and "extended forks" were styling elements that were simply part of the design evolution for dirtbikes in the 80s.  Those cues started showing up on Japanese dirtbikes in 82-83 and by 1984 almost every Japanese, Italian, Swedish, Austrian and yes Italian dirtbike maker had some variation of those.  They were not design elements introduced by Cagiva. The assertion that Morini obviously copied Cagiva because they are geographically proximate as opposed to the more likely explanation that both companies were simply following the broader industry trend and not leading it, seems a stretch.

I'm not right about everything!  No offense taken!

But I think the best way to support your point would be pics.

I know a lot of bike designs copy from each other, but the earliest humped gas tank (which is there because of the LONNNNG forks) that I've ever seen is the Cagiva bikes.  I've seen PLENTY of dirt bikes too, there are dozen brands that were sold in Europe and never made it to the states, like GasGas, Fantic, MZ, DKW, etc.

Happy to have this argument over beers and googling pics!  :-)
