696 Passenger comfort
«
on:
July 11, 2010, 05:12:35 AM »
I'm looking to make some improvements to the passenger comfort on my 696 for my wife. Her primary complaints are:
Sliding around on the seat
Legs cramp on longer rides
My thoughts for the seat slippage is to get a 'grippier' seat. I haven't seen anything out there that will work, so I guess I'm talking about getting my seat recovered. The DP touring seat looks like it has grippier material on the sides of the seat, so that might work. The optional hand rail on the 796 looks like an interesting idea, but my wife doesn't think that will be very comfortable.
As for the leg cramping, my local shop suggested getting pegs that have a drop. I found these (link below) on Monster Parts' website but it doesn't look like they fit a 696. I sent them an email to confirm.

Anybody have any other ideas? What else have you tried to improve passenger comfort? Thanks!
Aaron

I wouldn't give up on the lowering thingy from MonsterParts. See if they can be machined to fit your bike? It might very well help her leg issues. Just check if her lowered feet will interfere with your feet.
Have you tried "love handles" for her to hold on to?

i've been through this.
the comfort seat does give some more gripiness. but the triboseat cover i've heard is even better
i'm getting the 796 hand rails so she can feel where the rear of the seat is so she doesnt have to scrunch up so much to me, which also makes her legs scrunch up.
those pegs look interesting and i
THINk
they look like you could turn them upside does for the passenger mount. in fact i think the pic is upside down as the pivot/curved side should be on the top.

That's hilarious! I'm sure my wife would love this, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to wear it...

If you look at the alternate pictures, below the product description, it shows it in different configs. I believe it's ratcheted, allowing you to rotate the mount and peg in 16 different positions. I'll let you guys know what I find out from Monster Parts.

I'm sure that would help me, but what about the passenger?

I order the Triboseat covering as a first step. I'll report back on my findings.
As for the lowering pegs, I heard back from Jeff at Monster Parts and the official word on fitment is that these pegs are too wide for the 696. However, he checked with the company that makes them and they are currently working on a version for the new Monsters.

Sounds like you're on your way, making some improvements
For me, it has been important to stretch the elastic bands/cords to their full extension and tie them down in a forward/pulling location. This secures the cover, so it doesn't slide back. You'll understand when you have it in your hand.
Don't know about your seat cowl, but on my bike the cover fits under the cowl - no need to take it off and on for each ride.

I found another set of adjustable pegs that are available in several drops. Looks like you pick your pegs and then get the appropriate adapter for your bike. Pretty cool!

Well, my Triboseat finally arrived yesterday. Actually, I think it was lost in the mail on its way from England so when I asked them when it would arrive they shipped another one. Good customer service!
Anyway, got it installed (took about 5 minutes, tops) and took the wife out this evening for a ride. Wow, what a difference! She hardly budged. That Triboseat is seriously grippy. It feels just like that rubbery stuff you get for kitchen drawers. We'll have to see how it holds up, but so far it's tough to beat for < $25 delivered.

Good to hear about the Tribo seat
The MFW Vario are the ones MonsterParts used to carry. He switched his brand.
You choose three pieces, the bike specific bracket + length of arm + peg.
I talked to the manufacurer and told them about a mix up of the Monster bracket part numbers and they said they'd correct it, but never did. Everyone ended up getting wrong brackets and had to modify or gave up.
If you still want them - measure up some S*R passenger pegs against 696 - if they are identical or close enough to be modified, let me know and I'll give you the correct part numbers (if TwistedThrottle haven't changed them)(I'll check that too).
Did you get the "love handles"?
