Thinking about buying 999 on whim.

so I bought 998 on whim after I saw it at good price. (people here said I should buy it and that helped make my decision)
I just saw this 03 999 18000 miles (never laid down, good condition) for $5000.
I am thinking about buying this to make twin red ducati's lol
When I was buying 998 from the dealer, I asked him about 999.
he said, 999 almost put ducati out of business.
Personally, I like newer style 999 has. (wish it had single swing arm)
I also like its digital speedo.
It seems like he had to lower price because no one wanted.
I will try to buy it as cheap as I could so if I change my mind, I can still get rid of it without losing $$$
I am sure he will take $4800 cash. what's your opinion on this?
Do Ducati People look at this model as 'failure'?

Some of us believe that the 999 was one of the best they ever produced. I had one and in many ways still wish I did. There was a 999S with us on our ride today and what a good looking bike. To me the only reason that the 999 didn't sell as well as it did is that it was priced astronomically high compared to all the other bikes on the market at the time. If 5 grand won't hurt you then go ahead and get it and do your own comparison. It's all good.

I personally think the 999 is nice looking next to the Desmo. For me, they should route the 1198/848 back in that direction but what do I know.

There's heaps of discussion on various Ducati forums about the merits or demerits of the 999.
But it is mainly about the looks. Not many complaints about how the bike rides.
In fact, there is quite a bit of opinion to say the 999 is better to ride than the later 1098-1198 series. And plenty on the other side, but if it wasn't rather sweet the question would never have arisen.
Bike Magazine UK ran an article recently on great buys in superseded sportbikes. The 999 topped their list - but they couldn't find a clean non-'S' version for sale, with UK dealers saying they were being snapped up as fast as they went on the floor.
Seems like the model is looking better in hindsight.
If I had the cash for a spare occasional rider, a 999s would be my pick.

5K sounds like a steal!
I say buy it. The only reason some don't like it is because of the looks.

I guess I like 999 because of its newer look. if it was a monster, I would prefer old look but it's a race bike.
well kbb says $5200 for trade in. I will offer $4500 to see what happens

If you don't buy it, lemme know where it is so I can!
Just bought a 749 as a track bike, but was offered a ton more after it arrived, so it's gone before I got to use it. Kept most of the track bits, and looking for something to ride NOW.

I would like to point out that "thinking about it" and soliciting advice from strangers on an internet forum is not really a whim. Deciding you are going to keep ordering mash potatoes every time the waitress comes back to your table until they kick you out just to see how many orders of mashed potatoes the Cracker Barrel in Lexington will serve one person, that my friend is a whim.

I got me a 999 and I love it. I like the look of the 848 more... but after owning both... I like the way the 999 rides better.

I liked the bike (999's) from the first. It's a sweet engine and so far as looks goes? I could give a shit less what anyone else thinks about my motorcycle.
On another thread someone mentioned over $30 large for an 89 851? That's just stupid in my book - of course YRMV.
All things considered, the 999 for $5K sounds like a good deal to me.

I'd ride the hell out of a $5k 999! I really like that bike, but I don't have the budget for such a machine at list price.
