Is it safe to support the full weight of the bike minus tires and suspension from the engine?
Yes.

Lots of folks have supported the rear on a stand with the front propped up under the engine, either using a fixed platform or a jack. No problems mentioned. It is NOT the most stable configuration so keep that in mind and don't bump the bike or yank on it too hard while it's like that. Make sure you have some wood or something else soft so you don't scratch the engine.
That said, the rig Mitt has pictured is pretty inexpensive, can be put together from pieces at any home supply store, and breaks down for easy storage. That and a couple of ratcheting straps is all you'd need for the front end with the rear on a paddock stand.
If a carabiner is not load rated right on the side then don't use it to hold up anything important. Keychains are not climbing equipment.

The only thing I'd add is that ratchet straps are great for lifting, but not so much for letting back down. I use a small come-along.

+1
I used ratchets and luckily I didn't raise the bike too much. Letting it down was still a little tricky.

I have my yellow lab lay under the bike and then I say "wanna Treat"? When she stands up the Bike is raised.
Ok Maybe not. I guess I just use the Yellow floor jack to lift the front.
