Safe to ride? Parts replacement

So, my m900 apparently made its trip across the Atlantic laying on its left side.  Ripped the left exhaust off, broke the cf heat shield, bent the clutch pedal and arm attached to it, and bent my front wheel.

Attached are pictures of the problems.  My question is, is it safe to ride?  I can rig the exhaust so it will stay on.. sort of, but it will be loose.  My biggest concern is the front wheel, I want to know if it is safe to ride with that outward dent in it.  It will still shift so I assume the pedal is okay and at the bottom of the list to be replaced.

I need to be able to ride it, probably before I can get any parts, especially the wheel replaced in order to get licensed over here in Germany.  If I don't get in this next class it is another month off the road at least.

Much appreciated would be any recommendations on where to get replacement parts as well.

Bent wheel:

Clutch/arm:

Exhaust, it also just pulls right out of the header, very easily

And if anyone can tell me where this hose is supposed to go, it is currently connected to nothing at both the top and the bottom:

Thanks for any help!

Hello.
I'm riding with the same bend on the Front rim. No problem for now, but I'll try to repair it when I change the tyre. If you see any cracks, disbalance or if it loses air from the tire you have to repair it before riding the bike.

You can get the gear change lever straight with a vice and a hammer or with a suitable pipe, it is made of soft aluminum alloy, and won't brake, but be careful.

The rtansmision rod can work as it is now, if there are no cracks on it, but you can try to get it straight too.

The exaust looks really bad. Is it aftermarket carbone one?

This hose is draining hose for the battery, but your batery don't need it, because it is with gel electrolyte.

For parts you can check in the British or German eBay.

Good luck  [thumbsup]

+1 on everything above.

I would also check with the shipping company you used to see if they can be held responsible for some of the repairs.

2006 S2R 800 - She's just darling

You should check with the the people running the course you are taking.  They may do a safety inspection on the bike before letting you participate.

Thanks guys, the pipes I imagine will have to be replaced all together, but good to know that you don't see any major safety issues with it.  Does anyone know where I could pick up another wheel?

The shipping company will most definitely be held accountable for at least some of it, and if they try to bone me my insurance should cover some of the cost.  That was mainly why I was asking where to go to replace things.  I know where to find exhaust, and I COULD straighten the clutch pedal and rod, but if someone else is at fault and will pay, I figure I might as well get a new one.

Oh, and as far as aftermarket carbon or what are they, your guess is as good as (probably better) than mine.  I bought it used and the previous owner knew almost nothing about it.  It has fallen in half and I've looked at the thing all over and there is no branding of any kind.  The previous owner claims they are Vance and Hines, but I don't know for sure.

Some new developments...
Bike will not start.  Starter motor goes like a champ, but the engine might as well not even be attached.

things I've done since it got to me before trying to start it (I realize it was probably stupid to do anything to it before seeing if it started).

-installed powerlet cables, the starter motor is working, so this isn't it.
- put oil in plus new filter... don't see how this could be a problem.
- changed the spark plugs
- changed fuel filter

I'm hoping it has to do with the fuel filter, bike not getting fuel.  After installing the new napa filter from the proper one, the fuel line was tweaked a little bit and ended up breaking.  I had to cut off a bit and then put the end back on to the new filter.  I don't know how to check to see if the fuel is actually going anywhere.

Any tips about ANYTHING at this point would be great, I'm at a loss here and not really in a position to take the thing to a mechanic.

What year 900 is this?

IMO - you should take it to a mechanic and have them write up a list of damage. Those shippers did a number to your bike, that you are entitled to be compensated for.

Regarding the pipes... I've got Termis and if I peeled off the stickers there's no other obvious marks to say what they are. But, for a DSS monster, CF slip-ons from any reputable maker are roughly in the same price range. Shouldn't be much hassle to pull some comparable prices for Termis, Arrows, etc.

For your wheel - ebay or here. There's a decent chance that you would need different bearings installed to suit your axle diameter. But with the proper bearings much of the DSS lines of monsters can be cross parted.

For the fuel filter... you install it in the right direction? THey are directional...

-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

It is a 1996.  As far as the fuel filter, from what I could see it had an "IN" on one side, I put that side connected to the tank.  Is that correct?

your bike was shipped via military right?

if so, get a dealer, a ducati dealer, to get a full estimate on the repairs. take a look at your shipping document and make sure they don't put anything that is annotated on your shipping form, ie try to add in a new tank for a dent that was already there before shipping. you'll get nailed for fraud.

the dealer will give you a COMPLETE estimate and then you submit that quickly. i think it's a very short time the shipper is on the hook after that it's the military and they take MUCH longer and a closer look at EVERYTHING.

I should have asked before - but did it run before you messed with it? Considering that it spent a good bit of time on it's side, I wonder if it did... so I gotta ask.

After being on it's side, a float or two could be stuck... and god knows what else.

You're extra lucky you have a sealed battery. And older type would have been leaking acid the whole trip... yeah that would have been AWSOME!

That is a good idea, looks like I will have to do that.  I don't know where a Ducati dealer is, but I guess I can call USAA and have them tell me where the nearest one is.  I don't have any way to get the bike there either... maybe ADAC will do it or something.

It ran before it got in the crate, but I was an idiot and didn't even attempt to start it before I started messing with it, so that is my fault.  Can't say for sure if it ran straight out of the box when it got here.

go to www.ducati.com do a dealer search near you.

get a hold of them for towing, if not if you have ADAC plus, it should tow you. but even if you pay a small fee you'll get it back on the claim.

DON"T let the insurance run the show though. make sure you have documentation of everything on the bike that isn't stock as well. compare those prices to the quote the dealer gives you. make sure you are getting full value.

at the very least, your rim, shifter, exhaust should be replaced NOT repaired. and they will check other things that may have been damaged by sitting long term on its side like that.

Thanks, much appreciated, I will definitely get on that today
