Carabiners is what you are thinking of.
Yep rich, sounds like you need new ones for sure. Seriously, the Ancras kick butt. $100 says that wouldn't have happened to an Ancra strap. By the way, I use both types... Canyon harness on the bars with Ancra friction straps up front and two rachet straps on the back pulling slightly forward. I think I could flip the trailer and the bike would still be there. Thinking about one of those Baxley Sport Chocks on the trailer. Would still use the four strap set up just wouldn't have to rely on the front two as much.

Yeah we've got a whole box full of the medium duty caribiners that we use with the ratcheting tie downs. Run the caribiner through an eye bolt on the trailer and then find a secure place on the bike (or Canyon Dancer). That said, we've got wheel chocks as well - that's probably the bigger key to success using either the ratchet or friction type tie downs.

I'll sign up for 6 of the blue ones since they are a little stronger.
Oh wait, I have a question. Do the blue and orange straps have S hooks?? The picture on the website doesn't show them, but how the heck would they work without them? I noticed the Ancra straps made the point that they came with hooks.

used ratchets for years too and have not had problems. Unless you use then frequently, I always have to think about how they work. But with the larger mechanism, it's easier for me to tighten and seems to lock more securely. avoid rubbing on anything when I use them though.
Has anyone seen hooks which can be secured like what mountain climbers use (don't know the name of the hook).

Yup, the culprit from dropping hiero's bike was a ratchet tie down... rubbed itself until it broke...
