749 insurance buy back
«
on:
August 09, 2010, 09:01:10 AM »
So, i finger banged the shit out of the bike and I've been waiting for the insurance to throw a buyback price at my friend for a while now. till then i cant really start tearing the bike apart... but i was hoping to get some opinions from members here.
11,000 or so miles on the motor, its been blue printed by the previous owner who rode it for about 1,000 miles or so. Purchsed with 7,000 miles on it. Motor runs like a dream, ive ridden it plenty of times before the accident. The only bad thing is the regulator dips below 11 volts from time to time and the enigne cuts off.
mods that are recoverable: ducabike slipper clutch, termi slip on, STM frame plugs crg levers, speedymoto water pump cover, speedymoto clutch cover, DP teardrop mirrors
So heres the bike over all
The engine turns over nicely and revs without issue, even after sitting for a month. but theres stil lsome pretty significant damage. Wheels are straight and so are rotors ( to the naked eye)
the gauges still work, though the cover is gone. dont know if i will be able to get another gauge just to gut it for the frame and cover...

take the tires to a shop to double check they are in good shape. The slip on? Forks? Sell the engine and get some money out of it. How's the tank? Are you going to make this a project bike or simply parting it?

tire are getting swapped, slip on is in great shape, forks are done as the right side's caliper is ripped off. though im not sure if they are bent. if they arent the cartridges are still good, and if they fit my S2R1000 i was going to dump them in there. tank is in great shape. the edge of the tank too ka small hit, nothing a little welding and sanding wont fix (its too minor for me to care about)
I wanted to make it into a cheap track bike.
$1000 1098 front end including forks, triples and brakes
$300 subframe
$500 track fairings
$200 rearsets
new tires
ride off.
im just trying to weigh in if its even worth buying back. The right side grazed a parked SUV and im not sure where the imapct occured but the frame as far as the eye can tell does not have any cracks. I spent a good hour loooking. However the imapct was enough to snap the lower triple in half, and bend the front axle.
the radiator isnt broken, but its dented pretty badly. i think it will be fine until it goes down again.
the guages ..... they are fine, but the LCD screen is missing. it fires up without issue and the RPM gauge works. so... i guess i can just cover the guave with some polycarb and call it a day.

I missed the beginning ... It's a friend's totalled bike and title was taken by insurance co. ? 'splain it to me. I'd make sure it's truly mine before working out what to do with it.

He's buying it back from insurance. I think right now he's simply dreaming until he can actually buy. The frame is probably your biggest ($$$)concern. I would personally part it out and get me a nice SS and track that instead. people will always buy forks, S2R upgrades, and the tank, track bike backup.

the bike belogns to my friends out right no bills no nothing. title is in his name, he thinks the bike is cursed after this accident, i see an oppritunity to own my favorite SBK for track duty. After accident, the insruance company of the guy who hit him is offering him $$$ for a total loss for it. I assume if they pay for the entirety of the bike, they will haul it away and sell it as salavage to make some of their money back, or did i totally make the beast with two backs that one up? is that not how they do it? or is that only for bikes that are not paid for?
I have the monetary means to buy this bike if the buy back price is udner $1000 and it would sit for a few months before i can make the $2500 to put the right parts back on it. im hoping less because i just rememebred the kickstand took a chunk of the motor casing, so a kickstand no longer works unless you attempt to weld it back on or install a backing plate to ulitze the other threaded holes.
BUT, the frame being jacked up is what scares me since the imapct was viscous enough to crack the lower triple and the right caliper right off, as well as snap the subframe in over 7 different places...
but i think that if i buy the bike back, strip it down, and find out the frame has hidden damages ( i think GMD computracks charge abuot $300 for inspection only) , i can recoup all $1000 i spent on it, + some.. So it isnt that bad of a deal. Again my friend doesnt care what happens to bike, he genuinely thinks its curse.

What about option B?
Option "B" as follows:
Buy bike back
Part out said bike -- $2500 (I think you can get that with the goodies it has)
Save up the money you mention, $2500
Now you have $5000.
Now go look for a 749 tha's not FUBAR. Now I know that $5k, is a bit low for a 749 but I've seen a few go for $5500 on the Ducati.ms board. Plus, the $2500 is a conervative number if you part it out.

He works at a warehouse so its inside the warehouse right now. the bike is vauled at over $9,000 due to the wide assortment of aftermarket parts on it, so i dont know if they want to let it go that easily...
He hired a lawyer to deal with the BS of it all, and I had plans to move the bike to my garage and start tearing it apart, but his lawyer said to leave it alone. And it is in the end his bike so I'm not going to tell him waht to do with it. but if i charged him $25 a day to store the motorcycle in my garage maybe we can expidite a response.....
5k is way too much to be droping on a track bike for me right now. I woudlnt be able to afford to go to the track! and it would take me well over 6 months to even save the $2500 to repair the bike.

You could turn that wreck into something really interesting.. like I did with my slammed-into-a-wall at 180km/h (that´s when I fell/was thrown off):
**BTW, my rev counter is non functional, I shift up when the little red shift lights go ape shit**
I used a 999s chassis, Bursi subframe, motor from my 749 and then let my imagination take control.
You could build up a mean track bike or even create something really different, imagine that 749 motor in a Monster S2R1000 frame. You´d have your own S2Rs.
