If the running light filament on the bulb is blown, you'll clearly see it if you pull the bulb and look at it.
That filament is very short lived on Monsters. There's a lot of vibration and since that filament is always hot, it's more fragile than the brake filament.
Many of us have gone to LED bulbs after getting tired of replacing 1157 bulbs every few months. Others haven't found it to be a problem
I'm in the LED camp.
But as others have noted, corrosion on the contacts and general sloppy misalignment of the bulb may also be the cause of your symptoms... but my money is on the filament
