The actions of others just never seem to amaze me

So my wife participated in the Pelotonia Bike Event in Columbus today.

www.pelotonia.org

It is a fundraiser charity ride for cancer research where 100% of the proceeds go to the James Cancer Foundation at Ohio State.

There are 3 groups of riders:

1. Ones that want to race
2. Intermediate
3. Leisure Riders

So basically, this is not a real race, it is more of a charity ride.

My wife has been training for several months for the 48 mile ride (she has a mountain bike, with mountain bike tires = not the best distance bike).

She is cruising at mile 37, on the far right side of the lane, to allow faster riders to go past without interfering; riders were spaced out at this point. (you could do 23, 48, 108, and I think 200mi)

Well, some lance armstrong wanna-be duo with their 5,000$ custom carbon whatever you call it road bikes, come whipping up behind her and one of them side swipes her!!

he yells back "hope your ok," keeps yacking with his buddy, and rides off into the distance.

meanwhile, she hits the pavement hard.

Luckily, she was not injured too terribly bad; she banged her right knee on the cement which led to a trip to Urgent Care for x-rays as it doesn't look very good and was quite painful. It could have been a lot worse, but she is ok thank god. Severely bruised knee and a lot of fluid.

The bike came out with some cosmetic damage, but who gives a shit about that.

What an asshole.

Whatever happened to people stopping to make sure others are ok when they cause a wreck like that? The jackass wasn't paying attention as he was yapping with his buddy (she heard them coming up behind her) and just whacked her.

She was 11 miles from her goal and didn't get to finish it because of some typical asshole. However, she did raise a little over $3,000 for the James Foundation, so she is proud of that accomplishment.

It is just shocking to me and the event staff that picked her up, took her to medical, etc. that the guys didn't stop to make sure she was not injured. That is what pisses me off most.

We both realize there are hazards in cycling, but for this to happen in a charity event is despicable.

And it pissed me off on another level because she has been wanting a GPS for a long-time and I had one waiting for her at the finish line. Unfortunately, I had to give it to her under different circumstances.

>:(

I am glad that she is safely resting on the couch and I can't wait til Karma pays that asshole back.

That's a good idea. Thanks for the advice.

I'll see if the website has a forum.

Apparently there was a lot of this going on. The first 15mi, the roads were shutdown, but after that, it was business as usual on the roads, with signs noting to watch out for bikers.

Everyone was stopped at a red light and one of Tiff's co-workers got rear-ended by someone not paying attention. She wasn't hurt, but took a nice fall as she could't get her feet unclipped from her pedals quick enough. That person was very apologetic about the incident.

I guess some just don't have proper etiquette. My wife was riding properly, on the far right to allow the entire lane for those going faster, common courtesy. These guys weren't paying attention and just being idiots.

I've had the same thing happen to me here on a motorcycle once.

This asshole on a sportbike on the outer belt passed me in my own lane! I was probably doing 75-80.

He blew by me probably going over 100mph.

It scared the living shit out of me. I could feel the breeze off his bike he was so close!

Congrats to Tiff for making it that far and raising that much money.   [thumbsup] It sucks that people are such large bags of douche.

In all seriousness, what IZ posted seems like the best way to let it be known what happened.  Maybe the Jack-off will see it, feel bad, and apologize.  Probably not, though.  [bang]

That sucks.  Unfortunately there are assholes on/in all sorts of vehicles. :-\

Have her keep ice on that knee as much as she can.  Hope she feels better soon.

What a complete dickhead! >:( Probably does the same shit in his car. I could see a prick like that knocking a bike (or motorcycle!) rider down with his car and keep going. Ahhhh... did his parents not teach him to be a gentleman or even a decent person? Guess not. I can't believe others on the road that surely saw that didn't chase his ass down and jam a frame pump through his wheel! I'm betting on karma taking his ass out by a bus and calling it even.

Glad she's OK. [thumbsup] Good for her on raising the cash. She can be proud of that as she ices her knee. [clap]

Tiff has a side business of doing photography shoots, so she sold lottery tickets for 5$ a piece all throughout the company she works for. She posted her website and the amount of hits it got was (not surprising to me because she has a real eye for photography......weddings, families, children, etc type of photos. She also takes very good still life too, but I might be bias as she is my wife, but I think it is ever bit as good as people who do it full time) very high. That is how she raised most of her money. She raffled off 10 shoots, with 10 edited photos of your choice, and a CD of all pictures taken; an hour per session.

Yeah, she does shoot a .45 better than me, but I shoot a 9x19 better  ;D

I have found the cycle riders around here are complete assholes. They don't obey any traffic laws and really have no regard for the road other than their expensive bikes and their wanna-be Lance outfits.

I am surprised she didn't get up and start throwing shit at the guys, but she was doubled over in pain. She is a very strong willed individual. If she would have had it in her, she would have most likely climbed back on the bike and chased them down. However, a mountain bike is not nearly as fast as their little yuppie carbon fibre handmade bikes.

I am not sure what the law in Ohio is, but I think it should be what you have mentioned.

It is very strange around here. Bicycle riders are supposed to and adhere to the same laws as cars (you can get a DUI in Ohio for riding a bicycle drunk.....I have heard a rumor of it happening once) but they don't. The make the beast with two backsers where we live run red lights (even make left turns at a traffic light on red!!!!) and the "authorities" do nothing about it. I am not really sure why. Always an oddity to me that these die hard cycle people think they rule the road, but will be so quick to bash your car with their fist if you do anything to upset them (one cyclist actually caused an accident with a motorcycle rider 2 years ago.......the cyclist lived. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the guy on the motorcycle trying to avoid him. Said bicycle rider was uninjured and received no ticket at all).

I took her to urgent care when I picked her up. Other riders stopped after the incident to wait with her until a safety rider (motorcycle rider) discovered the incident. Once then, the other riders said their good byes as the safety guy waited til the pick-up vehicle arrived......which happened to be driven by a physician volunteering his time. He got her all bandaged up and to the next stop point, where I picked her up.

X-Rays came back negative, but a lot of fluid around the knee. She got some medication for the pain and swelling, compression bandage to help with the fluid reduction, and of course ice and elevation.

She is pretty funny on pain meds hence why she is already in bed since about 830.

To make matters worse, we have to leave early tomorrow morning for southern kentucky for her Grandfather's funeral.

All in all, it wasn't a great weekend for her, but she is happy she raised the money for cancer research and hopefully one day it will aid in the cure.

I am going to ride next year and if I am still with the same company (possible new job opportunity on the horizon, way the make the beast with two backs out of ohio came up today), I am going to get a team from my work together. Never can have too many people raising money for cancer research.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I will pass them on to her in the morning. It will certainly brighten her day as the rest of it will be hard for her.

I am one to believe that regardless of caliber, two well placed shots will have the same effect.

She learned to shoot on a .45 from Dave Sevigny. She likes a heavier framed gun. I just never have shot much .45's as I just got my first about a year ago. I am getting pretty damn good with my USP-45 Compact, so I will take her up on another shooting match very soon  ;D

Roadies here are pricks. Plain and simple.

She is sleeping now, so we'll see in the morning how her knee looks. Per the doctors orders, I gave it a good compression wrap before she went to bed and I have it elevate on some pillows to get rid of the fluid.

We'll see how it looks in the morning. Thank God she didn't break her knee cap as that is a nasty surgery; my Mom slipped and fell a few years ago and shattered hers into 17 pieces.

The best thing she did which I commend her on and which is very very very hard to do is...........not brace your fall on your hands = broken wrist.

She knew she was going down, put out her hand to stop the fall, then her brain kicked in thinking "shit, I'll break my wrist if I do this" so she tucked it back in and let her knee hit, then her shoulder, by that time she was in the gravel and grass, so no serious damage was done.

She said she almost saved the fall, but got loose in the gravel on the side of the road and just lost it.

I just feel so bad for her. She worked hard to raise money, put the time and effort in to training, and she didn't hit the goal she wanted.

Next year she wants to push it further and do the 108mi ride.

Therefore, I am buying her a road bike instead of her mountain bike she rode this year.
