Best way is with a set of stands on a warmish day if outside, or a warmed up garage. Get a strong light source (like the sun) and find where it highlights the outer lip of the rim the most. That's your working area. Choose a spot on the rim and stick the end of the tape.  The position on the rim (inside vs out) doesn't really matter - I just aim for the middle.

Lay down a couple inches of tape, slowly, trying to keep it tensioned, and consistently positioned. Once you get a couple inches down, move the wheel a bit, peel some more of the backing off and repeat until you go all the way around - then overlap the tape ends by an inch or so.

Working in that same area of the wheel helps you be consistent and keeping some tension on the tape helps it lay down smoothly.

And of course - be sure to clean the wheels well before.
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

I'll take you up on that.  I'd like to vinyl wrap my fork tubes.

Sweet man.  Thanks for the offer.  I might actually be in your neck of the woods next week so I'll definitely let you know. Dr. Yuu's surgical instructions were very accurate but I don't own a front or rear tire lift.

Lean the bike against a wall and lift from the front of the engine with a car jack. Works for me 100% of the time!

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

It could definitely be done, I'll take a look at mine and see just how big of a pain it would be. Wrapping a cylinder with varying diameters can be a pita but I'm sure it could be done. Only concern is how long the vinyl would resist rocks, big bugs, and Camrys until it knicked and looked like ass. Might have to experiment on mine...

Just drop a line and I'll see how my schedule shakes out.

Seat cowl - no. But one for any monster from before the 696 era will fit.

The shock - pretty sure not. Though not 100%. You might post the question in mods or tech. Someone there will have a for sure answer for you. To help you hunt. Look for shocks from a DSS monster from 2001 and later. Specifically 900s 1000s and S4s

+1

Seat cowls for 696,796, 1100 have the screws (or buttons) on the side. The previous models have two plastic flaps that go underneath the seat and through them you bolt the cowl onto the seat.

Pre 2001 shocks are longer and are very close to the exhaust headers, the bikes these fit on are known as "hooped" suspension.

Starting with the Monster 620, 695, 800, 1000, and maybe 900ie (Ian please correct me) Ducati changed to the same layout as with the Superbikes (916 - 999 - 1098) and Sport Tourers, so those shocks are most likely to fit your bike.

The issue with shocks, like the one you've posted, is to have enough space for the external reservoir. You need clearance for the vertical header, the ride height adjust rod and the shock to fit in that area.

Hope this helps, and that my answer wasn't too long and confusing. And if you're still in doubt, go ahead and buy it. If it doesn't fit you can sell it ;)

The 900 got injection in 2000 becoming a 900ie, but the 2000 still used the older hoop style suspension. So my bike a 2000 900S has fuel injection but the older frame.

One tactic people have used is to get a shock with a remote reservoir as opposed to the piggyback sort

Just snagged some a really nice ST4 fork for the front. Now to get the shock for the back and this baby will be complete, I hope.....

Thanks everyone for all the help with this project.  She'll look great when it's all done.

Never has a sillier statement been uttered when dealing with a Ducati.   ;D
