from 2000 to 2001 was there a design difference in the 900 engines? i was trying to buy some lighted engine gears from a 1000ds for my early 900 and the part number are slightly different, but the 2001 900 shares the same part number as the 1000ds gears.

could somebody give me some insight please

The '01 900s had the 1.84:1 primary gears and the close ratio gearbox like the 748.

I'm pretty sure the 2K 900s had 2.00:1 primary gears and the same gearbox as the larger displacement SBKs and earlier carby 900s

Brad Blacks site has all the details.
