NEW YORK (WABC) -- Police have made an arrest in a deadly hit and run accident in Manhattan on Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened just after 5:00 at West Street and Canal Street.

The 27-year-old victim was riding a 2009 Ducati motorcycle northbound on West Street when a maroon colored Nissan traveling eastbound on Canal Street hit him. The Nissan kept going.

The victim was taken to Beth Israel hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police later arrested a 25-year-old woman. Charges were pending.

Names of the victim and the suspect were not released.

They caught the guy:
"A maroon Nissan driven by Naisha Sutten, 25, of the Bronx, going east on Canal Street, clipped the victim's 2009 Ducati, heading north on West Street, at 5:10 p.m.., cops said."
Sutten allegedly fled the scene, but surrendered at the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn a few hours later. WCBS 2 says that she was charged with driving without a license, "leaving the scene of an accident and making an improper left turn."

Without knowing the details of the accident, it's hard to say who or how much fault there is.  Too often I've read about cases like this where the driver at fault walks off with some type of moving violation.  I hope the sentencing is appropriate.

This is horrible...

How will sentencing ever be appropriate?  I don't think the law is tough enough against drivers who willfully and recklessly endanger the lives of other people.  A life was needlessly lost.

Appropriate according to the letter of the law, I'm not talking about what we think is appropriate.

TRIBECA — Before Naisha Sutton fled the scene of a fatal TriBeCa accident on Sunday afternoon, she got out of her car and looked at the motorcyclist she had just hit, her lawyer said Monday.

The motorcyclist, Ronen Katz, 27, was seriously injured and would soon be pronounced dead at Beth Israel Hospital.

But at that moment he was still alive, Sutton, who is 25 and has a learner’s permit but no license, "observed the individual lying on the ground" at Canal and West Streets, said Howard Simmons, Sutton’s defense attorney, during her arraignment on Monday.

Sutton then got back in her maroon Nissan Sedan and took off before police could arrive, he said.
