Enzo and I have lived in this great little house in Oakland for several years.  The neighborhood, overall, is fantastic--within walking distance of a small retail village, good cycling roads, 20 minutes from OAK, 20 minutes from the city on bike, and just funky enough that we can paint our house purple or have a butt-load of motorcycles without getting a bunch of static about it.  The one exception to the awesomeness of our living situation has been the two women that have a house next door to ours.

They started out fantastic but have gradually become more antagonistic towards us and everyone one else over the years.  Rumor has it there's alcohol involved.  That's a horrible thing to say, but living next door to them we have seen evidence as to the truth of this talk.  Their antics have included several loud late night, weekday music sessions, one resulting in us calling the cops--twice.  There have been many instances of going into the backyard and screaming at people for various offenses like having windchimes or listening to a transistor radio.  I got called an "over-watering whore" for watering my front yard and accidentally sprinkling them once--it was night and I didn't see them.  They've called the neighbors on the other side of them and threatened them over the phone.  They approached Enzo once and basically wished him death and dismemberment because we ride.  They are two of the most obnoxious, loud and disruptive people themselves, but can't stand anyone else that they live around.  We've tried to work with them, but resigned ourselves to taking all of their crap in stride.  We've started to enjoy annoying them as a part-time hobby.

We had noticed both their cars were gone the other day and figured that they had gone on vacation.  But yesterday, Enzo heard someone showing the house to another couple and discussing pricing and what the amenities are of the place.  We *think* they're renting it out!  Hopefully they stay gone for good.  My guess is that they're renting it because they can't sell it for what they want. They've been talking about renting it out for a long time, too.  Cross your fingers for us!   [beer]

fingers crossed! You guys have a great pad, and I'm happy to see it move a little closer to paradise.

Anne and I can empathize. Our next door neighbors (either through extreme negligence or incredibly stupid acts) caused a gigantic house fire in 2007...which burned into our house in e process. The worst part is that they got the house for free...and insurance paid to rebuild the house after the fire. And the final injustice? Their place didn't get reassessed, and they're still paying $300 a year in property taxes on a brand new house.

Some people just suck ass. Glad these two ass suckers are mopving on.

No that was Enzo and Mostrobelles' house. You never made it past the property line...until now, they thought it was stray cats.

Next time, pee on the house to the south.  Same goes for vomit.  Thanks.

Is this the neighbor that tipped over your Duc (IIRC) and Enzo had to restrain you from your wrath onto them?  ???

Good riddance to the neighbors.  [thumbsup] Lord knows I've had my share of them. I guess I moving around as much as I do introduces me to how uneven human evolution really appears, especially among those singled-celled lifeforms sometimes called "neighbors".

mostrobelle

No, that was another neighbor.  She was a pain because she was apparently too busy to call her insurance company.  Other than that it she is/was fine.  People make mistakes...running over my bike was annoying, but at least I wasn't on it.  The two neighbors that are the subject of this thread probably would try to run over the bikes with us on them.  They don't hate just us--they hate everyone.

I'm a little sorry they're gone.  Today they would have had their windows open and Enzo and I were painting, running the bikes, running the air compressor, having the radios going.  One of them probably would have popped a vein.

If you really wanna raise a fuss, you can actually argue to the Assessor's Office that their assessed value should be higher. Yes, this is from personal experience with a PITA neighbor who built a house without any approval and knowledge of the county I lived in once (it was built in rural, forested land); they were getting away with very minimal property taxes despite a HUMONGOUS house on the property.

Not in this case. The Assessor already looked at the rebuild, and granted exemption because the house is in grandma's name. For all intents and purposes she lives in Mexico and her worthless children (and their miscreant children, who started the fire) live in the house.
