I have an iphone app that we use mountain bike riding to record where we go to share amongst friends
As it can be hard to describe a new trail by..............

" yeah you know you turn left at the pile of rocks near the burnt tree then go down to the creek" you get the picture.

So I turned it on and left it in my pocket while on the Old road on tuesday here is the ride if you are interested

http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=829565

Apparently you can take photos during the trip and they will download as a screen shot during the tour.
It seems to have one small bug as you can see , clearly I cannot get , no matter how hard I try my Monster to do 800 mph pity as i could of done the trip in about 15 minutes laughingdp

Hrm, interesting... Geotagging and logging came up last Thursday night too..
Couple of the iPhone brigade (I think I was the solitary non iPhone-er) were banging on about a different app which does GPS logging in the device (rather than to the web). Details were a bit sketchy but the generation of a GPX file was mentioned a couple of times.

In the past I've used a couple of things to achieve the same result but for the last couple of years I've used a Holux M241 for tracking and image geo-tagging.. It's served me well for a couple of trips through Europe.
There's only two disadvantages for bikes:
1 - I'm only able to log at 1Hz which is a bit too infrequent for heavy track use
2 - You're keeping a nice little log of your position and time which may be of interest to some people  Police

I had it with me on the five ferries the other week, though stupidly set at one record every 30 seconds.. (I'd lent it to some 4WD friends for a couple of weeks, so 1/30 is fine for them).. Anywho.. loading the GPX in Google Earth gave something like this... With all of those blue marks being individual recorded points showing location, time, bearing, estimate speed, elevation, etc.

Hi. I’m Troy McClure. You may remember me from such self-help tapes as “Smoke Yourself Thin” and “Get Some Confidence, Stupid!”

Yeah they'll be all over that 855mph top speed ... not so much the 24.5mph average speed Grin

Ouch you guys are harsh laughingdp
I did have an excuse , I was taking some L plate riders through corner lines so it was at a very sedate speed
I will be reading your future posts with this at the ready

Hey I am allowed to take the piss knowing I am slower than everyone on the forum.

But your average includes all you stationary time right? Like two hours for coffee.

Haha - when I said "I noticed that too" I was talking about the 855mph top speed.. Was pretty impressive! Shocked

Data looks like it stops logging when it's detected that you're not moving any more.. (Graph is speed v Distance as opposed to the expected Speed v Time).. which probably explains the odd peaks in the graph.. especially if GPS coverage is patchy

As an example, the first 10KM or so looks like it's averaging over 100MPH as well, which is probably inaccurate.

Looks like it's a great way to tell which route you took though.

Dez... does it spit out a GPX file or anything like that as well?

GPX files are a standard for storing GPS data.
They (normally) contain a series of waypoints (which may be grouped together into a route) which contain data like:
  • Latitude and Longitude of the point
  • Time the waypoint was recorded
  • Altitude of point (elevation)
  • Bearing (which direction are you heading/facing when you're at this point)
  • Current Speed (either recorded in the file or calculated dx/dt - can't remember which)
  • Descriptions, and other stuff

The file is XML which is just another way of saying it's an ordered list of data.

Those with a morbid interest in specs can look here for some more info.

... As mentioned, Matty and Mostro were discussing another piece of iPhone appery which might be useful if this isn't appropriate.
Alternatively, I've had good experiences with my Holux M-241.
When my interests in these things started I got a lot of info on devices from here
