SPEEDWAY INSTRUMENTS MINI TACHOMETER Install on a 1994 Ducati Monster 900
http://www.speedwayinstrument.com/Products.html1. The cover panel and the stock idiot light box from inside the dash. I had these spare so I didn't worry about hacking them up. The stock dash has three lights I never use, the sidestand light (the sidestand is self retracting), the 'headlight on' light (I can't turn the headlight off), and the low charge warning light. This gave me space for the new Speedway Instruments Mini Tachometer and the shift light.
2. Using a dremel, I cut out the separator between the two top lights, and dug around for a bit until the Mini Tach fit in flush. The wires from the tach run out one of the holes in the back of the box that was occupied by a bulb holder.
3. I also cut the separator out of the cover panel
4. Using the cover from one of those display files (with a texture that nicely matched the panel), I made a window for the mini tach. At this stage it still needed a little cleaning up.
5. I rearranged the lights and lenses to retain the ones I needed. The blank light to the left of the tach is going to be the shift light, and the globe behind it is the sidestand warning light.
I needed to ride the bike and was having a hard time finding the connectors I needed so I sealed it all up. The three wires from the tach come out a hole I drilled in the bottom of the cluster, protected by the sleeve that came with the tach. I also painted the panel white like the one I had on before.
6. I finally found the connectors I needed so I got to the wiring. The wires in the black sleeve come out of the tach and into the waterproof connector. Nice and neat.
7. I ran the wires from the other end of the connector through the stock harness and exited them where they plug into the ignition unit's harness. The single black wire just to the right is one I ran from the sidestand circuit. This essentially comes from the negative side of the sidestand light, before it goes to the sidestand switch.
8. I wanted to keep the wiring as close to stock as possible, so I wanted to be able to remove the instrument panel, ignition unit harness and main harness as separate units. With that in mind this is what I came up with. Luckily the ignition unit's harness had a connector that had 12V coming in but not out, so I was able to plug the tach into that.
The numbers (10, 15, 12) are pins on my ignition unit. 10 was already there, it's the signal from the ignition unit to the coil. 12 is the shift light signal and 15 is the tach signal. IC2 is one of my ignition coils.
9. This shows my new 4-way connector and the connections for 12V into the existing ignition unit harness.
10. All bundled up and ready to go!
11. At idle, 1100 rpm.
12. 3800 rpm

The Speedway Instruments Mini Tachometer is a real nice piece of work. It is definitely the only tach out there that will fit this discreetly inside a Monster instrument panel. It's steady, easy to read while riding and is dead easy to set up with the Ignitech TCIP4 ignition unit.
