Be *really* careful with the rings, especially the oil rings.
They are not very rugged.

Good to know.  Thank you.

(Hopefully we haven't already effed them up unknowingly.)

FWIW

The best way to remove it is to have a welder weld something to the broken stud and wind it out while things are still warm.

A broken stud can easily turn into destroyed threads with your method.

If the threads get bunged up I can always weld them up and drill and tap new ones.

Here we go.  That didn't take as long to upload as I thought it would.

Effing Broken Stud

With this setup it only took about 7 hours of drilling to get deep enough to use an extractor.   [roll]

That setup has a definite "There, I fixed it!" flair to it. [cheeky]

Now it's just a matter of getting one of the make the beast with two backsing extractors to work.   >:(

It might be time to add some heat.

If you can weld then why not tig a smaller stud on and unscrew the thing?

Kids... [roll]

You can try that after you break off the extractor. ;)

Extractors suck. I've had limited success with them....

+1 on the tigging on of a sacrificial stud.

Penetrating oil, whack with hammer and punch, apply some heat.

You *really* don't want to break off an extractor in that hole.

No TIG here, just MIG.

Regardless, how would you weld a stud to the remaining piece if it's broken inside the case?

Are you talking about welding a smaller diameter stud onto it?

eta: Yep, just noticed I skipped over a word in DP's post.  Oops.

So you're gonna mig  and retap the aluminum cases?  ???

I think not Keemosabe.
