I am contemplating doin the cored can mod, but am not sure I want my pipes to be obnoxiously loud. So a few questions, hopefully you can all help make up my mind.

1. Exactly how loud would you say cored cans are, like straight pipes, or some standard after market pipes?

2. Has any tired to do a partial cored can. Meaning just taking off the cap, and thats it, which is one of the first steps in the process? Forth pic in this link.

or simply drillin some hole in the end like this.

Can it be done? Opinions please.

Thanks,
Dave

1.  Cored cans are on par noise wise with most of the after market selections.  Your Termis, Arrows etc.

2.  I'm not sure.  Obviously doing a little drilling is easy and if you do opt for a more complete core job, that drilling won't have hurt that.

The stock mufflers muffle so much because the exhaust actually travels up and down the body of the can.  The pipe inside makes 2 180degree bends before it exits.  That's why you see 3 pipes when you get to the chipping stage of coring - you've cut out 1 bend letting the exhaust and sound travel more or less straight out.

If fully cored muffs are comparable to some termis, sound wise, then I think I will go for it. Thanks yuu

Volume wise they are on par.  The tone's a bit different.  With the CF used from most of the Termis it deadens some of peaks that you hear with metal cans.  So You'll let out the noise and get the deeper rumble- but it'll still have a touch of metallic to the sound.

Google around a little.  There was a site that had audio clips of various Duc exhausts including cored stockers.

I rode with a guy this weekend who had an M750 running shortened + cored stock cans, and his bike was easily as loud as mine running a full Termi setup...

-Didn't sound half-bad either, In fact his exhaust note was pretty cool + growly when downshifting!! Definitely sounded better than I thought it would... I would absolutely recommend it as a cheap alternative to slip-ons based on the M750 I heard this weekend...  waytogo

With the CF used from most of the Termis it deadens some of peaks that you hear with metal cans.

It's the fiberglass inside the Termis (and most other aftermarket cans) that attenuates the high frequencies, not the carbon fiber shells.

Don't drill holes in the end caps!

I tried that with Monster cans and didn't like the results one bit.  It wasn't enough to let out the good Ducati sound, but I could hear the air rushing out of the holes, so it was worse than not doing anything.

I've done two different "half mod" jobs on Ducati cans and was happy with the results.  All you have to do is remove the tubes in one of the two rear chambers to get a good sound but still be way quieter than typical slipons.

On the Monster, I cut off three inches from the rear and removed all tubes in the rear chamber, but left the center pipe in place so that it still looked mostly stock.  It sounded great.

On my ST2, I removed the tubes from the center chamber and left the rear part alone.  You can't really do it that way with low-mount Monster pipes, because you can't slide the aluminum sleeve off.  I feel that the ST2 now sounds "just right" with that modification.  I would do the same for my 888 if I could find another set of stock pipes to fit it so I would have the choice of going back to totally stock.  Unfortunately, pipes for that bike are very rare, so it remains stock.  But that bike sounds better stock than most stock pipe Monsters that I've heard.

Nice video hooligan machinist, sounds great. I have heard info on fully cored and partial cored cans which is what I was looking for, and I have to say fully cored sounds good to me. Thanks, this interweby forum thing actually work. Thanks for giving me faith. waytogo
