I stumbled upon the nichols kickstand bolt, but how does this bolt prevent the kickstand from automatically retracting? Where does it go?

It replaces the stock kickstand bolt that I think has a nub the spring bends over to make it auto-retract.

Actually, it's flat.  The spring slides across or over the head of the bolt.

So is it held in place by friction? Or does the extended travel allow it to lock into place, like a regular stand? The stock's hex head prevents the spring from traveling further.

The stock bolt has a boss that sticks up.  The metal plate holding the spring stops there and pivots some.

The Nichols/etc bolts dont have the boss.  Metal plate remains straight and no spring tension to pull the stand back.

I have them on my bikes, zero issues.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.
