S2R Exhaust Ideas?
«
on:
November 02, 2010, 10:12:10 AM »
I'm interested in putting a new exhaust on my S2R 800.. I don't want to spend HUGE money.. A few questions:
What are some good ideas with out dumping $2000+ on it?
Is there a BIG difference between slip ons and a full exhaust?
Could I do the slip ons myself? is it just a bolt on part or do I need to do other things?
Thanks!

I'm the least mechanically inclined person on this board probably and had no problem bolting on an exhaust and mid pipe. Look for them used or check with Monsterparts.com, I saw he's having a sale on certain exhausts. Haven't cruised the sponsors but I'm sure some of them are discounting their prices. I will say this, I bought the GP style exhaust from a forum member
http://www.motovationusa.com/mvstore/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=581
but my wife took possession of it so I swapped the under tail exhaust with her. There are many options that don't cost more than the bike....well, almost.

Cheapest option out there, just needs a bit of patience and a dash of bloddy mindedness.

Buy used or find a close-out, all new exhausts bend you over and ram it; HARD.
I prefer the ex-box, not the best sounding (arrow) but looks the prettiest imo. If i gave a rating, arrow is 9/10 and ex-box is 7/10 but it is also slightly quieter than the arrow which is good. They are way over priced but i got mine on closeout which helped.

Wow, I feel a can of worms is just about to be opened.
First thing is, do you want Carbon fibre or Alum, or Ti.
Second, Slip ons or full system
Next, under bike exhaust, shotgun style or left and right configuration.
decisions decisions.
Check the sponsor board for any specials or close outs.
good luck.

There will be no difference in power if you don't also get midpipes, open air box and ECU ( $$$$$ ). Even then it's only a handful more bhp.
So, I suggest slip ons. Looks, sound and easy installation. You won't need anything else. Your bike accepts slip ons without further mods.

I guess you need to ask yourself some questions before making any decisions.
1) You're interested in the idea of putting new exhaust. For what ?
a. just for the look and / or sound
b. performance gain
c. both
2) How long do you think you are going to keep that bike ?
a. will sell in a few years
b. will keep more than that
c. don't know
3)Any particular preference in style ? (over & under shotgun , side by side, exbox, single silencer, ...)
And material ? (of the silencer)
4) How much is your budget ?
Then, you'd get some idea of what you want. Don't buy exhaust based on somebodyelse's opinion. Get what you want, then you'll be happier.
Couple of things to keep in mind ...
IF your primary interest is the look /sound, slip on may or may not do. (You'd still be left with hideous udder, and the sound difference may not be up to what you expect.)
You can get, for example, ARROW slip on system, then later on change mid pipe (to get rid of udder, or for more performance. At that point, you'd most probably want opening air box, ECU mods, etc.) Don't have to spend big money all at once. Not just Arrows, there are many combination of mid pipes + slip on system that can be made to work that way.
As for the look, search the image of S*R bikes with aftermarket exhaust as much as you'd like.
As for the sound, unfortunately, you really have to listen to the real exhaust note. (Video clips give you some idea, but really, you have to listen to the live sound.)

Boomtubes are a good option for a different look and less cash. Not sure what you are looking for in the noise category, but I think Motocreations can tone them down on request. I went with Termis first time around, but I like what Mark made for me much better.
Actual Boomtubes look a little different (check them out on
www.motocreations.com
).
If you like the stock exhaust configuration, I think Arrows or Termis are the majority choices.

Nice! I like those boomtubes the way it points back instead of to the side. What did this cost you?

I also liked the shorty style GP Termi from Motovation USA but there's no version for my bike.

The cheapest option is to run it off the udders.
Slip-ons should be cheaper than full system
Boomtubes rock and I would highly recommend them!

He sent Mark his Termi system, so you would have to have that first. I don't think he's doing this to other manufacturers exhausts anymore.

My personal #1 choice would be ~$1300 for full Arrow. Best sounding exhaust on the planet for the S*R bikes. Second choice would be to core the stock mufflers and buy a midpipe, preferably a Quat-D. ~$500
http://www.ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=35964.0
Those two only work with a new airbox & ECU. If you're not also installing an open airbox of some sort
and
an ECU upgrade, just core the mufflers and call it a day. ~$100.

Yea, I sent my DP headers to Mark and he made the baffled tips and had all of it ceramic coated. He did a killer job. I didn't know that he wasn't doing that type of work anymore. Still, consider his boomtubes. They sound great and my bike runs just fine using the stock ECU. I am pretty sure he can baffle them to your preference.
