poor idle question with a twist

Alright folks, I did actually take the time and did a search for my issue. But I could not find anyone that had posted with the exact same problem that I am having.  Bike has been running great and has just started doing this in the last few rides.  So here goes.

Bike: 01 900/944 ie monster purchased from the DMF classifieds last year.

Symptoms:  Cold starting after sitting all night/for a few days.  Bike starts right up, idles and runs great.
                 
Short shut downs like stopping for gas  the bike will resume start up, idle and down the road running.
               
The problem  starts when after I have ridden for awhile and then stop for a period of time and then try to restart.

Very hard starting and when it does will die immediately,  as I continue the starting process the bike gives out raw gas smell and tail
pipe smoke.  Clutch feathering and throttle attention will get me down the road for a short distance with the the bike running better until it is running fine again. 

I obviously have a fuel rich restarting issue, but why is it only happening after it sits.  The vast knowledge of the collective is sought.

Speculation: Could you have an temperature sensor that is going/gone out?

I know that the '01 is pre-lambda, etc. so I'm unsure how the temp sensors play with the FI system, but it's a thought.
