I dream plenty about vintage sports sedans like the BMW 2002tii & Datsun 510, and almost nearly pulled the trigger on a "free" basket case Porsche 914.

But the dream vehicle that I've invested the most time & thought into is one that we picked up over the summer:

It's an '85 Toyota FJ60; the so-far unrealized part of the dream includes a diesel motor swap and more outfitting for desert/overland use. I used to own this one, a 1973 FJ40, so the current motor is one I'm pretty comfortable digging into:

And like most dreams, living with it day-to-day in the wide-awake world has its challenges; let's just say it's surprisingly able to fill the bill as our only 4-wheel vehicle despite the 250,000+ miles on the clock.

it's a shame that toyota gave up on diesels in the US market.  the FJ overseas with a diesel is awesome.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Fortunately, some of those used Toyota diesels are starting to find their way into the U.S. parts market -- but the downside of Toyota & most other manufacturers giving up on diesels in this market is that there just aren't that many mid-size diesel options that'd fit in this vehicle. Most of the U.S.- built diesel truck motors are simply too big to fit reasonably inside the Cruiser's engine compartment.

The bad part about my year Ranger is the weak-ass 5-speed transmission.  The TC's had BW T-5's so they're a lot stronger...

Hence, Id like to do a whole driveline upgrade as my clutch is weak right now...  That, and my neighbor has an 88 TC in his backyard rotting away...

You just cant leave ANTHING alone can you?  Live with the fracking truck as it is and finish your  Cafe Racer!!!

cummins b series fits right into a FJ. Not a cheap conversion but they will fit and work great. Of course there are major mods to do but you will have a bullet proof motor in your FJ. Figure on 20 large for everything including beefing the suspension to handle the extra weight.

For 20k you can drob an FJ body on a shortened diesel truck chasis

For 20k you can fly to Europe, buy a used diesel FJ, boat it back and pay an RI to convert it to american standards.
