OK,

On Tuesday after a long day I hit the road to go home; coming from a full stop at a traffic light, I accelerate till about 5500rpm and bike starts going 'pum pum pum' bruuuppppmmpp', get the idea? Also, 'plack plack' coming from air filter and  accordint to guy in car, about 18" flames from the Termis ... I stopped to check for anything wrong and in desperation, took, better said, yanked of the TFI controller. Now I do have backfires again when decelerating. Will save up for DP ECU.

Got home, mad as hell, checked all electrical connectors, all hoses, emptied fuel tank and checked hoses, everything in place and tight.

Took spark plugs out, covered in black sooth, Iridium plugs that don't have more than 2000kms on them, completly damaged, installed the old 12000kms plugs and bike's running great.

Any ideas of why this happened?

Hasn't it been raining there forever?

I'm thinking water in a connector somewhere.

First question's answer .. YES, but, had a no rain day that day ...

Second, I checked all connectors, took battery, tank, airbox, all plugs out, checked for water, loosenes, even sprayed some contact cleaner ... and carb/fi cleaner, when everything came back together, wham as if nothing had happened ... bot plugs where damaged ... iridium

Check that the exhaust headers are tightly bolted in at the heads.  My top one occassionally gets a bit loose and the engine backfires through the exhaust when using engine braking to decel, although I can't attest to throwing flames as I'm always the sweeper  ;D

You can easily tighten the top cylinder's exhaust-header bolts by removing the seat and going in from the rear with a standard ratchet fitted with several extensions...it's a PITA trying to come in from the side  [thumbsup]

Well OT, I'm behind the guy that's behind the sweeper ...

I had the backfire issue before I installed the TFI controller, this cure this issue, but, in desperation[on my way home, 15mls away] I yank it off; as I stated, checked all connections, electrical and mechanical, tomorrow, I'll check those headers and give an update ...

From readings here and the other places, the popping/backfiring issues are commonly caused by the lean setting our bikes have from factory ... Next XMas[2011] gift from me 2 me a DP ECU ...

Not always true. I had the exact same problems no more then a month ago, my mods: open airbox, termi exhaust, mid pipe...... I got the PC3 put in and got it dynoed. It was running EXTREMELLY rich when throttle position was at neutral, so rich infact that the tuner had put -40 values on 0 throttle from 2500rpm - 5500rpm

cakeman,

thing is, in Panama, we have no dyno ... that's why I had the Dobeck TFI ... but, in desspair at 30mls from home, I yanked out ...
