KTM 690 Enduro

A 690 Enduro might be my next bike as I don't have anything to go trailriding on and I want something I can ride to the trails, good fireroader or throw some soft bags on it and go anywhere.

A 530EXC or the new 500EXC are also being considered, they would do a lot better on the trails obviously. not as good anywhere else

I got in touch with the seller and it's still around. Not that I have any ability to do anything about it for the rest of the year. So I'll just have to see if it's fate or not.

Another bike that you might consider is the Husqvarna TE610/630.  Its very similar, probably a few hp down compared to the KTM, also probably a bit easier to work on.  I wish I'd seen that you wanted a big euro DS as MFI had a TE610 with 600 (not a typo) miles for $3,500 - Pilette call to give me first dibs, knowing it was a steal of a deal.  After I passed on it it sold within ~ hour of being posted online.

If you want a cheap and slow dual sport I'd sell my DR so as to have one less bike to move to FL (I don't ride it much now that I've got the Buell and XR)

Regarding maintenance -

I think these bikes are easy to work on.

My 450 exc is cake to pull the carb or check valves. 

I helped Dan The Man do a valve check on his 690 and I think we had the valve cover off within a few minutes and the valves checked within another few minutes.

Yeah they aren't bad, its just a little easier to get to most things on the 610 with its backbone rather than trellis frame.

I've yet to do anything with mine including washing it, so this makes me happy to hear as I might actually start looking it over with riding for the most part done now.

Does anybody have any idea how many well maintained unabused miles someone could expect to get out of one of these?  Especially if it was mainly used as a commuter street bike?

Quite a few 950 sm/smr guys on adv rider with 30-40 thousand miles.

Maintain it and it will last.

If it is beaten properly it should last indefinitely.

As far as I'm aware no one has worn out a well-maintained 690 yet.  The RFS/XC4 and LC8 are totally, completely different engines from the 690 and built for different purposes so RFS, XC4 and LC8-related stuff is not really any more relevant to the 690 than is how well your Monster lasts.
