I want a Jeep Commander with the CRD engine.  They sell it everywhere but in the US.

California's ARB knew that the research tasked with deciding the diesel particulate and emissions rules LIED ...

..but accepted the recommendations anyhow.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2009/apr/25/lz1ed25top192452-air-board-knew/?uniontrib

QuoteAccording to a document provided this week by the California Air Resources Board, on Dec. 10, 2008, air board scientist Hien T. Tran admitted to Bart Croes, head of the air board's research department, that he had lied about having a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of California Davis. Tran was no minor player in the air board hierarchy. He was the lead scientist and coordinator of an ambitious, far-reaching study on diesel emissions that air board leaders thought made a powerful case for sweeping new rules governing the heavy-duty trucks responsible for most such emissions.

At this point, the air board's responsibilities were plain: It should have immediately suspended Tran and commissioned an independent outside evaluation of Tran's work. And it should have put off action on proposed regulations based on Tran's research.

Instead, on Dec. 12, the board voted unanimously for the rules. Reporters covering the high-profile hearing at which this action was taken were not told that the air board knew the lead scientist on the study justifying the regulations had lied about his academic credentials.

As a result:  Few good diesels in the USA, and the ones that are here have tons of unnecessary emissions crap on them.  Why?  11 states other than California use the ARB's regulations.  That's why the Jeep Cherokee/Laredo with the CRD engine was only 39 state legal.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I would love to shoehorn that motor into my jeep

WTF California?

I was thinking more along the lines of talking to Mexico about that planned Aztlan expansion...

it just blows my mind that the ARB would be AWARE of outright fraud by one of its personnel and still accept their recommendations..

I have a Jeep Liberty with the CRD engine.  The engine is great but I've been through 2 transmissions, numerous recalls and some pretty poor customer service(may be specific dealership related).  It gets about 20mpg in FWD, 25mpg in general driving and about 29mpg in long distance, warm weather, cruise control highway driving.  Once the turbo spools up, that jeep is a little rocket.
This isn't a dress rehearsal for life - this is it!

Seriously? "Oh no I can't get exactly what I want exactly when I want it! And I'm just going to complain into the void and condemn an entire 163,696 sq mile area instead of actually doing something about it! Help! Help! I'm being repressed!"

The CRD in the Liberty is the small VM engine..  the Cherokee and the Commander both have the 3.0 V6 CRD..  it's supposed to get about 30 mpg highway!

I agree with this. Only people that enjoy things the way they are should be allowed to stay.

the 163,696 sq mile area that you know as "california" differs from the govern-mental body that outsiders refer to as "california"

also

diesel technology is a necessary improvement over that of current gasoline technology

and

this individual has impeded that process

thus

folk who are interested or have a pony in the race of diesel technology should be pissed (thus complaining)

since "california" is a U.S. leader in emissions regulation and other states use their research (now unknown if they are accurate or a result of personal prerogative)

Soooooooo . . . because we don't like one regulation that affects our purchase of a luxury item we cannot condemn the actual land itself but we can condemn the entire "governmental body" of that land. Okay.

Aaaaaaaaaand . . . if you don't like those other things you could:

1) Move
2) Quit whining
3) Do something about it
4) Go get the damn jeep anyway and lie your way through the registration process

The issue at hand would be that of regulations adopted in light of unqualified research

not of the purchase of a "luxury item"

the regulations are a result of a

"far-reaching study on diesel emissions that air board leaders thought made a powerful case for sweeping new rules governing the heavy-duty trucks responsible for most such emissions"

this directly affects emissions standards of the transportion industry

which is a significant source of inflation

or

you could follow your own advice

I like all the californians I know (including Mrs Ducatiz from LA)

I love the land.

The continued stream of nonsense such as this issue pisses me off.  The ENTIRE auto industry is affected.  Cali and the 11 states following CARB in such an ovine fashion are about half of the US car market.
