Emissions canister removal line routing

After noticing quite a bit stronger fuel smell as the temperature has cooled, I discovered that the previous owner had removed my emissions canister to fit high mount exhausts.  I've done a bit of research on here, and a lot of the removal faqs recommend connecting the vent line and the canister line with a y-connector.  Is this just to clean up the rear end?  Currently, both hoses drop down to the rear of the swing arm.

Also, any suggestions on helping with the smell?  I've read some people attach a fuel filter to the canister line.  Might this help with the vapors?

I did the exact thing they mentioned on the tutorial and no more gas smell but I also fixed my leaky hinge too.  takes two seconds to connect the lines and I'm a mechanical IDIOT.

Right on, guess I'll pick up a y-connection at Home Depot.

My tank's hinge isn't leaking, as far as I can tell.  No streaks in dust, no drips.  I've checked my spark plugs, mixture is fine.  Valve guides are seated correctly.  It's definitely the dangling canister hose.

I'm surprised at how much more prominent the smell has been in the winter.  I read on another board that this could be caused by an increase in gas expansion within the tank (cold ambient, heated gas vents, more smell).

I'm not even running a vent hose, just the overflow hose, and I don't have any gasoline smell.  :-\

Two into one or separate hoses will make no difference, either way the tank is vented to atmosphere.

yeah but someone like me feels like he's accomplished something  :P
my biggest achievement was the leaky hinge fix with JB WELD.  ;D
