696 Touring Seat
«
on:
December 29, 2010, 03:44:04 PM »
My parents got me the touring seat for the 696 for Christmas. I tried to put it on the bike and the pin doesn't line up with the lock mechanism. I loosened the screws holding the latch into the Comp Werks tail tidy and was able to move the latch toward the back of the bike to get it to line up. This moves the tail light toward the back slightly. The pin engaged but now turning the key doesn't seem to want to release the seat.
Has anybody else had issues fitting it or did it just drop on like the stock one? Also any suggestions for getting it to release would be appreciated.
I also tried to fit the seat cowl, and its screws don't want to line up. Is the touring seat compatible with the cowl?
This seat is really starting to drive me nuts. I like the way it looks, but if i can't get it on and off easily and I can't use my cowl, it is going to have to go back.

This seat is really starting to drive me nuts. I like the way it looks, but if i can't get it on and off easily and I can't use my cowl, it is going to have to go back.
I found that when I put the seat on for the first time, I had to press down on the rear end of the seat for it to latch. To unlock it, I press down so as not to snap the key. In time, it form fits to the bike and gets better.
I think the padding is thicker on the touring seat, therefore the cowl needs persuasion to be put on.
Sorry, that is the price you pay for not having crushed nuts.

yeah, just push down slightly on the seat when turning the key like CDChase said
the cowl does work, just realize it's a tighter fit. i always push down on the cowl a bit when putting on the screws and even when taking them off so as to not scrape the cowl.

Not to be a d**k, but you may have moved the latch when you did the CW tail chop install.

I have this seat like many others, the seat pan is the same as original and is not the problem.
I have the Ducati short tail, and I had loosen the lock adjustment screws and move the lock to the rear about 1/8" to get the seat to latch. besides that make sure the lock cable is not at a sharp angle.

I instaled the same undertail and have the DP touring seat w/ no issues. Check your undertail and where you remounted the latch. it should have gone in, in the same place you took it out of.

I have the touring seat and did a compwerks kit on the back. I had to readjust the latch as well. I loosened the screws just a bit and kept playing with it until it was aligned just right. Once I had it right, I tightened the latch screws at their final position. Now, I have no issues at all. I never have to push down or anything. The key turns with ease.

How well does the 696 touring seat do riding two up? With standard seat the passenger keeps sliding forward and has to adjust the seating position frequently.

I have the touring seat on my '10 696. I have not done much 2-up riding yet, but the seat does have a "grippy" material along the side panels that should help in keeping your passenger in place. Will know more when the weather gets warm enough for my passenger to ride again. Other than that, I really like the seat. The grip material definitely provides help in keeping me from sliding forward too much. It also gives a small increase in ride height and firmness.

My CW tail kit has been on since I bought the bike. The stock seat goes on and off without any problems. when I put the stock seat next to the touring seat, it looks like the latching pin is in a slightly different place (toward the back of the bike).

The foam on it is about double the thickness of the stock seat. It feels like it raised the height about 3/16" - 1/4". Once the foam breaks in, it might be a little less.
