probably obvious, but it's not about where astars is based, it's that rossi has worn dainese for over 15 years and "they didn't promote his winning the motogp world title to lorenzo's satisfaction."

...i'm also sure that alpinestars is throwing lorenzo a good deal of money in the process.

Oh I know.  But it's also not about where Dainese is based either.  Like you said, it's about the fact that they're in bed with Rossi.

I just found it interesting that in the article they tried to make it look like the fact that Dainese is an Italian company was somehow relevant, while Alpinestars is HQ'ed only about 20 miles down the road from Dainese.

faster yes, greater is up for debate, as to me, there is a lot more to being a great racer than just being fast...Nicky has the heart, the work ethic, the will, and the charisma to make it through all the crap without slinging anyone under the bus, and lets face it...he has transitioned from a completely different end of the world of motorcycling in comparo to Jorge...one that if the shoes were reversed, I am not sure that Jorge would have been able to overcome the same diversities?

What he overcame doesn't make him a greater rider, winning races and championships does.  Nicky, while I prefer him much more as a human and root for him, won less races in his championship season than did Jorge by the time they finished at silverstone this year (5th race of the year) and one of those 2 races Nicky won was only because Colin nearly killed himself right before the finish line.

Charisma, humility, good-ol-'merican, those are all great, but that less have less than nothing to do with being a great racer.  A great human maybe, but not a great racer.  Jorge took on the best field there has been in years and demolished them and it's not like he was a slouch the previous 3 years (pole in his first race ever at Qatar anyone?) in addition to his accomplishments in 125/250s.

I think Jorge is as milktoast as they come, but he's still a greater rider than Nicky has ever been - hopefully Nicky will do something this year and change that (but I'm not making any zooom bets on that one Wink.

* Not that I'm a marketing expert, but can someone explain to me (and Yorgey) how winning the world championship can be attributed in any way to the leather protective gear a rider wears....how does it make him go faster?  coffee

when you go out every day and do your job...do you wear boxers or briefs or otherwise?....when you wear something different...does it irritate you or leave you slightly unsettled in some small way that gives you a smidge of discomfort and takes you just a smidge off your game possibly due to a slightly distracted focus?...

well...given what they are doing....every ounce of distraction amplifies quickly...not having that lil extra ability of some feature that a suit may give them can be alot....it can change the focus for even a split second which can be that crucial moment when traction is not optimum and they are needing some level of flexibility that isn't there for them to just move into that 1 position for to save a situation...but I am purely speculating on that last thing...

maybe the bottom line is, he feels he is a World Champion and he wore their gear and was  looking for some level of financial compensation that they were not prepared to hand over, or he was looking for X number of pieces of equipment provided free of charge and they are only prepared to give Y...

so....the Yammyhammer still has no sponsor whilst Jorge selfishly racks up his own deals...

http://motomatters.com/news/2011/01/13/still_no_title_sponsor_for_yamaha_s_moto.html

best image in my head I conjured up with reading this was inspiredby this quote...

"...Yamaha will appear at the first MotoGP test of the year at Sepang with bikes painted either in Yamaha's corporate colors, or else with plain black carbon fiber fairings...."

...I am somehow imagining a Black Carbon Fiber clad bike with a #1 on the nose and white lettering on 1 side saying "This Space For Rent" and on the other some quote about "Inquire about Advertising Opportunities-Call 1-800....."

selfishly?  come on dude.  he's world champ.  he earned all the Rockstar dollars he can get.

yamaha's sponsorship problems really aren't his problems.  they were also inevitable with the rossi move, unfortunately.

Because as 'valuable' as Jorge and his fans think he is...

he just doesn't command the $$$$$, or the perceived value to sponsors Rossi does.

That doesn't diminish his ability as a rider.

Add the fact that the economy sucks and Jorge doesn't stand a chance to be a cash cow for the Yamaha racing program.

modified your comment for to add the following afterward...

....and he will continue to not be a cash cow for the Yamaha team until he has multiple championships under his belt...
