"The Rev. Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas responded to the shooting by posting a video on the YouTube website, saying, "Thank God for the violent shooter." He vowed to have his band of followers picket at the funerals."

I have read about motorcycle groups organizing to help peacefully buffer the picketers from the actual funeral.

Here is a website for the group that is managing the effort -- http://www.tucsonmemorial.org/

There is a PMRG (Phoenix Motorcycle Riders Group) contingent going as well. info here:

Wish I could go, but it's Thursday and I can't take off work....  Sad

Why the make the beast with two backs would someone want to protest the funerals is beyond me and pisses me off supremely. (sorry for the swearing, Michael, but it angers me greatly)

I dislike saying someone is "crazy" unless I know for a fact that they are clinically bonkers, because I think that excuses their behavior and it relinquishes them from responsibility.
AFAIK, Fred Phelps is not crazy.
He is a very, very bad man - Unethical, dishonorable, sleazy and just plain wrong.

By unanimous votes, AZ state lawmakers in both houses of the Legislature passed emergency legislation to bar such protests within 300 feet of funeral and burial services for one hour before and after the ceremonies. Violators would face a misdemeanor charge.

Thankfully.

Now, show them to the grape-flavored Kool-Aid.

The Phoenix Motorcycle Riders Group left at 8:30am. I originally signed up to go with them and join the buffer between the funeral and the would-be protesters, but I started getting sick (head cold) yesterday and today I can barely function.

The word is the protesters were a no-show, but it's nice that they went out to show support nonetheless.

I'd certainly be in favor of a total ban on the WBC. There's a group of hate-filled loonies if ever there was one.

<mod hat>

even though this thread is kinda "off the radar", politics/religion/etc rules still apply.

that is all.
