the celica just had a plug wire break. I've got it patched, but I dont' liek the idea of electrical tape in the same place as spark plugs. I will be fixing it today most likely. I'll do plugs and wires at least, but my question is this: should i replace the cap and rotor as well? is it somethign that should be done at the same time or is it soemthing to check to make sure it's still in good order?

the car has 79K on it and doens't get drive that much. The last time I drove it was 2 weeks ago when i drove it to work and slid into a curb. (stupid cages, they cost way to much  [laugh])

pull the cap and rotor off and look at the brass contacts to see the level of "burn" on them...I might take a steel brush and clean those contacts and see how things are from there, but it depends on how much crap has toasted on them...

If you are doing wires and plugs you might as well do the whole thing, cap and rotor too. Compared to the cost of wires, cap and rotor shoul be cheap. If it has points do those too. At the least the car will run better and get better mileage.

I highly doubt it has points and a condenser....but I get where you are going...and since the car doesn't get driven that much, he may not want to sink a lot of money into it...and a Cap & Rotor may not be as cheap as you think...but I do bet it is probably close to being a little cheaper than the set of wires...but not by much...

i replaced the cap because i don't know how many miles are on it, it's easy to do, and it was $12.
also because i kinda broke a little rubber boot on it as i pulled it off. it's been sitting in the shade and it was 15 degrees when i went out this morning so i'm not terribly suprised [roll]

the wires were $50 and they came in red. i asked if he had another color like black or even green to match the car. they only had red. ohh well, it's not being entered into any shows and i'm pretty much the only one who will see it besides the guy who changes my oil. (i am not a fan of doing oil changes on cars)

the rotor would have been done too if i felt like spending another $40 and spending more time in the cold fiddling around trying to get to the screws holding it on. plugs and rotor will be done when i have more time and it's warmer.

$65 is far better than the $300 the guy tried to quote me for parts and labor. i will let them change the oil though.

A rotor should only be a few bucks. If you do the cap, might as well do the rotor too. When it warms up.
