Woah! Close one. Did you see him the whole way or at the last minute?

I saw him as soon as he stepped out of the treeline thank goodness. I just had time to piece the video together last night, so I will go back and see how long it took from the time I can see the deer in the video to the time I was on the brakes. Since the full-rez video is 60fps I should be able to get a good idea of how quick I was. To be honest, it felt like I was way more clear than the video shows so I have to say that I was luckier than the I felt at the time!

Digging Hamilton Pool Road!! waytogo Lived in Austin all during the 70s when I raced bicycles and supposedly went to UT! laughingdp Would do a bike training ride during the morning and dupe the same ride that afternoon or before dark on the '78 SR500, '78 Guzzi 850 LeMans or the '80 CB750F. Back in the good old days when the 620 loop around the lake was just a little 2 lane country road and the hill up 2222 was called the "Wall". The good bicycle training routes were also great scooter rides! [moto] The old state road course championship loop was called the "Buda loop" and the first race of the year was always La Primavera in March around the high school off Bee Caves 2244 I think it was in West Lake Hills. Good times!!

Oh... by the way, glad you missed the deer! waytogo

I hear you about the great roads just a short ride out from town. We took 1431 out to Marble Falls and then came back into town on Hamilton Pool. I had planned out a longer ride that would have included quite a few more great twisties out there, but just didn't have the time for a 6 hour long haul.

It is too bad about all of the great roads that used to be, closer in to town. Most of them now are much more built up or heavily trafficked, but there still are a ton to be had!

It's amazing how quickly that can happen. I had a near impact with a deer last summer.  I was doing about 50 on my MTS 620, came around a bend and I swear the damn thing strolled right in front of me, and froze.  I put on the brakes, squeezing harder as I got closer, and just about the time my back started sliding the deer (now about 6 feet away, although it felt like a foot) jumped away.  I remember thinking "Damn, that's it" right when he jumped.

Yep, they have paved over the hill country around Austin for sure. The last time I was on Mount Bonnell a few years ago I couldn't believe how the distant hills were covered with mansions! It was sad to see. It would be suicide to ride a bicycle on 2222 or the 620 lake loop. Still some great hill country roads, you just have to work harder to get to them. waytogo Here in DFW it's just easier to head up through SE Oklahoma and into Arkansas. Great roads up there for sure... and deer! bang head I hear there are also wild turkeys in Oklahoma. laughingdp OK, maybe one less. Grin

Lucky and glad for it I bet.
On our last Austin trip we took the same road to Marble Falls and ate pie.  Banana cream is the best  drool
I swear you guys need more hunters because there are herds of them surrounding Austin and even into Kerville and Bandera.  I see them on the side of the road no matter the time, heat or cold.

Wouldn't that be a near hit?

Never understood this near miss business.

Deer and Buzzards, a few miles from here last year a rider hit a buzzard do only 60 they figure.  Hit him right in the chest and trauma to the heart killed him instantly.  Darn, no hunting season on buzzards.......

All else considered that is called nothing but good timing, If you would not scratched your ass for two seconds that morning?  Congratulations, you won! applause

Ok, so Near Hit...  Smiley

I was following my buddy and he missed the turn that you see in the video. We were headed back when I let him pass (you see that at the beginning of the video just after the turn). It is completely possible that if he had made the turn the first time the situation would have been completely different. Luck was certainly shining on me that ride!
