Are you sending it to other ipod / ipad / iphone users?  It will not send message to non-apple cell phones - that is my experience anyway.

It's like BB Messenger, only for iPhone users. You would need a different app to send IMs to BBs.

iMessage is currently iOS-device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) only... i expect it to eventually be including in/merged with iChat.

SMS/MMS as long as they're unlimited. I've always liked BB messenger. It's about time they implemented somethig similar on the iPhone/iPad.

Make sure iMessage is turned on.

the contact phone number is greyed out after I start typing.  then a red exclamation point.

Touch the exclamation mark. It should give you details.
