I just changed my stator its a very easy fix . pull it out and send it to  RICKS MOTORSPORT . THEY SENT ME A REBUILD OFF THE SHEF FOR $140 .  This is why you need full syn /poa/ oil so it dont overheat and cook your stator like mine was . lock tight the three bolts in and use grey peratex on the side covers no gasket . very easy fix very common with these 60 yr old design motors.  Send your reg. with it to get checked , i did and they said it was fine , instead of selling me a new one . Good info.  Not sure if it was a factor, but the oil in my 696 was Royal Purple 10W-40 synthetic.

Max-Cycle High Performance Motorcycle

reduces engine heat
increases HP

Obviously it was not cool enough, or the breakin oil did the damage before the change.  Original owner did replace a battery before me.

Went good, BUT, I picked up a used 620 multi stator.  Everything was same size BUT, the OD was like .110" too big would not fit the 696 magnet drum.  In the interest of getting her back on the road as soon as possible not having anything to lose, I turned an aluminum fixture (with three holes drilled and tapped for 6mm) and mounted the stator on my lathe, turned it down .080" before running into a wire.

Still had insulation between the wire and base metal, so mounted it up and we are good to go.  Charging at 13.6 volts at idle.  My RR was fine, so now I will be selling a RR on ebay that I did not need.

For anyone else trying this, I would recommend getting the drum that fits the stator, but I have not tested if it bolts up okay to the 696, it appears to be fit tho from pictures.

GREAT FIX ..it seems i would have sent my old one in for a rebuild or exchange and ben done with it ... cant think how much that drum would cost it things went wrong ... now in the bikes lifetime the ORG wont fit .

Drums are like $24 on ebay right now.  Don't follow you on what will not fit in the future??  The stator fits INSIDE the drum, nothing changed there, just the wrong stator for the 696.

The stator was $60, so no big loss there if I trashed it compared to a new $543, or rebuilt $140 and 2 weeks down time.
