M900 SBK swap, what calipers?

Just went to mount my stock calipers after doing a SBK swap on my '96 M900. ('95 916 forks) Found out that there is about an inch of space between my pads and my rotor...
What calipers do I need, and do I also need new rotors? 
I was under the impression this was going to be a straight bolt on, I'm already beyond budget and going nuts with trying to get this damn thing back in one piece, one new problem after another...

So it's entirely possible that I'm just retarded and put the forks on the wrong sides.  I can't tell if the offset is different because I don't have a light in my garage and it's dark out here, but will find out tomorrow if that is all the problem was....

if you put the forks on the wrong sides, you'd either have the crazy casting side of the fork bottoms showing, or they would be facing the wrong direction (on the FRONT side of the fork)...

Are these the forks you have?



If so, do they have the showa writing on the outside? Are the heads of the axle pinch bolts facing forwards when you screw them in?

Just to reiterate what other folks have said:

Are the pinch-bolts facing forward (they should be)
Can you see the smooth side or the casting side for the caliper mounts and which way are the calipers facing? (they should be smooth and facing backwards)

Do you have the correct caliper mounts for your calipers?

Some SBK forks had a 66mm mount some had a 40mm mount

Although if this were the case you wouldn't be able to bolt your calipers on in the first place.

Thanks for the reply,this was my panicked thread when I thought everything was messed up and it would be an expensive fix.  I sorted out the correct side for the forks and now my calipers will fit.... once my wheel does.  I posted another thread with questions about that.  Long story short, my axle runs into my speedo drive, is this as simple as getting the 25mm speedo drive and swapping the internals with mine?  I have the either 20 or 17mm axle that has a larger side of 25mm.  Hoping the speedo drive will swap directlz into my wheel and let my axle work, does this sound like the right fix?

you need the hollow 25mm axle and the associated 25mm-axle wheel, and a monster-specific 25mm speedo drive, and you are set.


buy some calipers so you know what you got. for example: measure inside diameter of the bearings on your wheel - where your regular axle goes through - if its not 25mm, you need to get a new wheel too.  (or, if this is the wheel you had before, and it worked with the solid axle, you are going to need a new wheel, axle and speedo drive)

great... this is far beyond what I thought this was going to take  .  I can fit my wheel on right now... backwards  .  If I install my axle from the left fork and put my spacer in the right, the only issue right now is running into the 20mm speedo drive with the 25mm portion of my axle.  However, when looking at it, it appears that the axle doesn't need to go any further than the back of the speedo drive to fit.  I have a 25mm drive on order, it should be here soon.  Everything I order takes 1-2 weeks or more to get here since I'm in Germany, so I'm going to wait on getting anything else.  Maybe I'll be lucky and this is all I'll need... doubtful I guess.
Gives me more time to do my valves myself I suppose, probably all summer, ARGHH

its really not so bad -

if your speedo drive is for 20mm axle, and your front wheel is originally, you replace both - they go together, and the axle should be the hollow one for newer monsters, supersports, ST, 748-998 (the hollow 25mm one, that isn't for the 749/999 and not the latest 848/1098/1198/SF/MTS1200). 

Your rotors WILL bolt over, so no worries there.   The wheels and axle you are looking for are from any 748-998 (pick 3 or 5 spoke pattern) or any newer Monster, SS, ST (not 696/796/1100).   The speedo drive, I believe, should be the monster-specific 25mm one - or the output gearing is incorrect (or so I think I have read).  You are very close on what is kind of a big job (I did this before as well - its much more involved for the pre-2000 Monsters because of the different front axle size, leading to different speedo pickups and wheels) These parts are all easily had for not too much scratch on eBay, or from one of the bike parting-out units like Gotham Cycles, etc.
