Hi everyone,

I just bought myself a second hand '09 1100 and was trying to remove the cover on the pillion seat. Now i assumed that this can be removed with the use of an allen key to undo the little silver locks on either side of the seat. Problem is they twist but dont undo! You can actually see the plastic clips on the inside of the seat turning but cannot hold them in place to make it undo.

Am i missing something? or am i correct in this being the correct way to remove the cowl and they are potentially just to tight to undo properly?

I am sure I am doing it right and feel a bit stupid for not getting it off and hence asking this question, but i figure i wont know unless i do actually do ask.  bang head

Thanks in advance for anyones help.

Cheers,
Frent

Another Aussie M1100 owner  Cool.  We're taking over.  Welcome aboard  waytogo.

You're doing it right.  Seems like the previous onwer overtightened 'em for you.

But you know what to do, take the seat off the bike and hold the balck plastic inner section to stop it spinning whilst you undo the aluminium bolts with your allen key.

PS: Dont forget to call in and say hello over in the OzMo section too  >>   Oz Monsters

That's great, thank you for confirming this for me. I had tried pulling the seat off and doing exactly what you said and it didn't budge. Will have a bigger go at it next time.

Thank you again Smiley

ok ... no luck Sad ... one side the whole nut/bolt/clip thingy turns and wont be held still by nobody, to add salt to the wound one of the clips has snapped off but thankfully it still holds on ok. on the other side the aluminium bolt turns but the nut/clip bit doesnt so the threading appears totally dead but still wont pull out at all.

might just have to find some nuts/bolts to replace these ones so that i can use some real destructive force on them. angle grinder here i come!!  bang head

Sorry to resurrect such an old topic.  My new (old) Monster has the same problem.  Just like Frentoperfin the aluminium bolt turns but won't loosen.  On neither side does the plastic flange, under the seat, move.  In the end, did you succeed in chopping the flanges off and replacing them?  I am working on a list of parts I need to order and will add these.

ok ... lets try and remember ... i did successfully remove the plastic flange without damaging the main aluminium bolt. i think i used a little vibration based saw (almost like a mini renovator tool) which cut through the plastic fairly easily. the replacements weren't expensive.

i no longer have my monster and am all the sadder for it Sad

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.  I know how you feel, I regret selling mine and have been scouring the classifieds for a good quality replacement since mine went.  From your avatar I'm guessing you are still on two wheels?

I'll do as you suggested and order replacement plastic flanges and then chop the old ones up.  The main reason I need to the cover off is to attach the DP bag, and I don't use it all that often.

I'd bet someone cross threaded them when putting them on and used too much force tightening them.  It is really easy to cross thread them.

Aren't the threads left handed down under?   Grin

No, but the wiring is backward.  Three of the four indicators had to be wired black to red and red to black!

Got mine out - but only after hacking the original to pieces (I'm talking power tools here!). Thankfully I had the foresight to buy replacement flanges so now have a working pillion cover again. That should not have been such a difficult task!
