It doesn't sound like the Alfa is more expensive than the GTI. Bastards!!!!!
So the only reason I could think of would be that the backseat was none existing. I have 3 kids and should be able to at least fit 2 back there.

Get the Forester instead. You will be MUCH happier.

I'll check both. Which one gets the better gas mileage?

The outback has a six spd tranny and lower profile which gives it the mpg edge but the foresters shape gives more headroom and cargo space in the back. I think the forrester ha. Four speed trans but a much beefier suspension

You can buy the VW in the states... The Alfa is sexy from any angle. I have yet to see a picture of the GTI that makes it look good. Damn that's a good looking car!!!!! I'd fall for it in a heartbeat. Here's my advice (please keep in mind I'm a formaer Alfa owner.) Go buy yourself a nice Honda, Toyota or Nissan. Also buy a good sized rubber mallet. And pickup a sales brochure for the Alfa. Every time you get into the reliable car and wish you bought the Alfa pull out the brochure, stare at the beautiful Alfa, pull out the rubber mallet and give you left hand a good whack!

I think I would get a Landrover Defender first, then the Alfa. Wish they sold the Defenders in the US.

I can't believe that "settling" on the GTI is a bad idea.
