696 throttle position sensor voltage...no throttle input.

Hey all,

I'm a little disappointed with my service manual I downloaded. Very minimal information trouble shooting and diagnostics. I'm suspecting I have a TPS problem however I need to know the proper referrence voltage to the sensor, Most reference systems are 5 volts in automotive...same for Ducati??

The issue I'm having is the bike will idle but basically has no throttle input and bogs at anything above approx 5% throttle input. Barely limped it home. All I've done to the bike recently was install a K&N filter, fill it full of gas, and wash the winter dust off it. I've visibly checked the wiring to the TPS and checked for moisture intrusion to the weatherpack connector. I have had to tap into the TPS for my Power Commander V but the connection is proper and clean. I was thinking I may have got bad fuel but the bike ran fine for 50km after fill up.

It almost feels like a fuel pressure problem, however when I monitor the throttle position data with my Power Commander software it seems to be searching for TPS input. The value climbs slowly to 100% with the engine idling and with the key on/engine off, the value does not change when the throttle is manipulated. I'm pretty sure it did previously. I have completely removed the PCV TPS reference wire with no change. With the engine running and the TPS completely unplugged it acts the same but idles slightly higher.

Anyway... I would like to test the TPS...does anyone know the reference voltage value? My voltmeter is at work so I was unable to do any troubleshooting this evening. Hope to get a look at it tomorrow. Also any input on the problem is alway appreciated.

Max throttle 5V. Idle 350-450mV.

For 2V nonlinear TPS.

Your model & year would help.

The bike is a 696 (Siemans injection), may be different specs.  I will see if I have any later.

As I suspected, the manual does not have specs says to check it's function with a DDS tester [bang].  The tester does display data so maybe the dealer can answer your question.  Is the bike still under warranty?  Have you tried the bike with the Power Commander disconnected?  The manual says the TPS is nor available as a separate part, you must buy the throttle body.

Thanks for the responses... The bike is under warranty but the nearest dealer is 500km away so if it is a small item it is cheaper to fix it myself.

Did some diagnostics tonight...

-I do have a 5 volt referrence at the TPS connection
-I also have a good ground at the connector

With Key on/engine off I have 299MV on the orange signal wire when back probed....seems about right. Now here's where things get interesting...

Back probing the connector I have only 318 MV at WOT but the slight increase is incimental with throttle opening ...meaning I have approx 309 MV at 50% throttle etc...

Seems to me I should have close to referrence voltage (5volts) at WOT like a typical automotive TPS

I pulled the TPS off the throttle body and was suprised to see the back side of the TPS is not sealed to the elements and had water intrusion from my wash job. I used WD40 to displace the moisture and blew it out with air but it still acts the same.

Got a quote on the TPS and it's $330 CDN.... as previously mentioned...it must be the whole throttle body.

Call the dealer and tell them what you found.  Maybe you can work out a solution with them through the mail.  Worth a try.

Phoned the dealership and they said they would get back to me....never did...

Sooooo.... Anyone with a 696/1100 feel like back probing the orange wire on their TPS connector and telling me what they get when they manipulate the throttle?  [bow_down]

call another dealer. Seattle helped me out recently when I had an issue

Thanks... I'll give that a try on Monday. Up here in Western Canada we are limited on dealerships and the service is less than favorable. The dealership I bought my bike at recently closed down...it's a shame... they would have helped me out for sure.

10 bucks via Paypal to anyone that wants to provide me with a voltage reading back probing at the orange wire on their TPS!! ;D

Hmmm...curiously I think I have a similar problem. Recently my 2009 696  with 7k miles started acting up. I give throttle and once in a while it just dies on me (slow speeds). The bike is warm. I also think something is up with my side stand switch. A couple of times the bike would die the moment I would put it into gear. I suspect the two are different problems.

FWIW....The issue was indeed the throttle position sensor. Installed a new one and it's good to go.

TPS supply voltage is 5 volts.... volatge on the orange wire ranges from 300 millivolts at idle to 4.5-5 volts WOT.
