How to clear a CEL light on an M696?

Hello all,

My girlfriend just picked up a 2009 M696 from a dealer this last Sunday.  As I started it up for her yesterday morning, I noticed that it seemed very difficult to start and her CEL light is on.  Since the bike did not come with anything but the key, can anyone tell me how I can retreive the code to try and identify what popped the light?

Also, how can I go about clearing the code?  Would pulling the battery cable for a few minutes do it?

Thanks for any advice, I attempted searching but couldn't find any definitive instructions.

The dealer is the only option as far as I know.

If you know anybody who owns a Rexxer device, they can read out any logged error codes and reset.

That's disappointing, but not surprising.  I was hoping there was some method available for the home mechanic, though.  According to the dealer she bought the bike from, the CEL pops up when the high-idle switch is open during the ECU POST sequence.  Is this a common issue people run into with the 696?

Sadly I don't know anyone that has a device like that, it looks like I might be out of luck on this...  Shoot.

The owners manual for the bike should tell you how to pull the code, and the owners manual also tells you what the codes mean. You have to use the switch on the left handlebar that allows you to see the battery voltage, and the rpms on the main gauges, plus all those other functions. Extremely easy to do.

As for clearing the CEL, the only way to do that is to resolve the problem.
You might just have a low battery code, or something more sinister.

And the CEL shouldn't come on if you use the fast idle lever.
I think your dealer is blowing smoke up your butt.

There was no owner's manual provided with the bike  [thumbsdown]
It sounded a little odd to me since it sounds like Ducati would basically be inviting CEL's all the time if setting the high-idle switch would bring it on.  Personally my habit is to pull the choke on before even turning the key, but I wasn't sure to call them out on it (it was KTM dealer, so I wouldn't put it past them to be in the dark).

Now I'm very interested in figuring out what's going on.  It would suck, but this bike might need to go back if there's something funny going on...:(

The only time that happens to me is if the bike is being pregnant dogy and hard to start. If I've attempted to start the bike (unsuccessfully) a few times the cel will come on until I urn the key off and back on.

Blackzone, you can download an owner's manual here:

Is the dealer a Ducati dealer?

Thanks for the link!
The error code states "Fuel" on the display.
And no, it wasn't a Ducati dealer.  It was a KTM/Star Cycles dealer.  They got the 696 in on trade.
